Saint-Gervais-Sur-Roubion reveals its medieval character through its fortified walls, the gateway to the old town and its covered passageways. There are also marked circular routes of varying lengths and activities. This lets you plan your visit around two specific interests: historic architecture and events, or a short hike or longer cycling loop. Local discoveries range from Renaissance features at the château to a Friday market and swimming spots in the Roubion.

Old Town, Fortified Walls and Château

A fortified gateway crowned with machicolations leads into the old town. Narrow lanes and covered passageways preserve its medieval character. Remains of battlements and openings for machicolated galleries can be seen in the village walls. The gate and walls show defensive architecture in different ways: at the entrance, as a fortified structure; along the village walls, through preserved individual features. The fortified walls also offer a sweeping view across the Marsanne plain.

The oldest wing of the Château de Saint-Gervais-sur-Roubion dates from the Renaissance. It retains mullioned windows, a ceremonial balcony and carved architectural details. The mullions divide the windows; the balcony and carvings draw attention to other architectural features. These Renaissance elements provide a contrast with the medieval character of the lanes and fortifications. Visitors interested in architecture can compare the different forms found in the village.

Stage and Events

The Théâtre Le Fenouillet is a rural venue for artistic creation and live performances. From May to August, its open-air theatre hosts festivals, concerts, events and themed evenings. If a particular performance will determine your travel dates, check the specific event dates for your planned stay.

The local festival committee also organizes the annual Fête votive in August, as well as other events in the village throughout the year. Exact dates and programmes vary from year to year. The August festival and the theatre’s seasonal open-air programme offer two different points of reference if you would like to plan your visit around events.

Marked Circular Routes

“En allant vers le Roubion” is a marked, signposted, easy circular hike covering 3.35 kilometres. It starts and ends in Saint-Gervais-sur-Roubion; the stated duration is 50 minutes, with an ascent of 20 metres. This makes it easy to assess the hike in terms of distance, time and elevation gain.

“Les Ramières du Roubion” is a marked, easy cycling loop covering 13.73 kilometres, also starting and ending in Saint-Gervais-sur-Roubion. The two routes therefore differ both in activity and length: a short hike is paired with a considerably longer cycling loop. Both are described as circular routes and start and finish in the village.

Friday Market and the Roubion

The Friday market offers goat’s cheese and other milk and cheese products, meat and charcuterie. Participating vendors may vary, so bear this in mind if you are looking for a particular product.

The sweeping view from the fortified walls across the Marsanne plain adds a landscape perspective to the historic village setting. There are swimming spots in the Roubion. Check current local safety advice before swimming.
