Pierrelatte offers a variety of ways to explore: historic sites, events, walking and cycling routes, and a visit to the Ferme aux Crocodiles. When planning your trip, you can treat these as separate areas of interest rather than combining them into a single sightseeing itinerary.
Culture and history in Pierrelatte
Le Rocher houses an open-air theatre and is classified as a site of artistic character. Concerts, theatre performances and other events are held there. The venue therefore combines a cultural distinction with specific types of events. If you are interested in the performing arts, Le Rocher is a destination in its own right among the places to discover in Pierrelatte.
The historic centre also offers a way to explore the town’s history: it has been inhabited since the 11th century. Self-guided visits are possible there at any time. This means you can explore the historic core without a guided tour. The Village Provençal Aimé et Simone Brun offers another perspective on Pierrelatte’s historic sites. It features 341 santons, including 114 moving figures, and depicts some of Pierrelatte’s historic sites.
The town’s history also includes its windmill. It was built in 1839 and restored by the municipality in 2011. The two dates mark distinct milestones: its construction and its later restoration. Together with the historic centre and the depictions in the Village Provençal, the windmill provides yet another way to explore local history.
Walking and cycling routes
The walking route “À la découverte des chapelles à pied” offers a themed way to explore: it allows you to learn about the history of Pierrelatte’s four chapels. The route is accessible every day throughout the year. If you would like to connect a specific story with several sites related to the chapels, it is a good way to discover Pierrelatte on foot.
For a cycling trip, there is the “La vie du Rhône” loop. It connects with the ViaRhôna, starts at the Pierrelatte tourist office and heads towards the Rhône and the Donzère-Mondragon Canal. The tourist office offers maps and route guides and has a bicycle repair kit.
Wildlife and tropical plants
The Ferme aux Crocodiles offers a different focus. It is home to 700 reptiles and includes 600 tropical plant species and varieties. It offers free activities close to the animals, as well as an entertaining and educational visitor trail. Self-guided visits are available on an ongoing basis.
The options are therefore quite distinct: Le Rocher is all about theatre and events, the chapel route combines activity with history, and the Ferme aux Crocodiles focuses on reptiles and tropical plants. You can choose which ones will shape your stay according to your interests.
A seasonal market visit
The Pierrelatte Producers’ Market is held on Wednesdays in summer, from 5 to 7 pm. As it is a seasonal event, it is best to check the dates before your trip. The market is therefore a time-limited addition to the sightseeing and routes, rather than a year-round activity.
