In Saint-Gilles, Romanesque heritage meets a wetland rich in wildlife. The abbey church and the Musée de la Maison Romane are cultural highlights, while the Marais du Cougourlier is all about landscape and nature. When planning your stay, it is also worth taking into account the different visiting arrangements for each attraction.

Romanesque Heritage at the Abbey and Museum

The Abbatiale de Saint-Gilles is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France”. Its large, partly underground crypt offers a distinctive architectural experience: it is arranged around the tomb of Saint Giles. The design of the building is thus closely connected to the saint to whom the abbey church is dedicated.

On 17 September 2003, the Musée de la Maison Romane received the French designation “Musée de France” under French heritage law. The Archaeology Room displays medieval sculptures from the Romanesque abbey of Saint-Gilles. Part of the museum is housed in a Romanesque building dating from the late 12th century. The abbey, sculptures and historic building therefore offer different ways to explore the town’s Romanesque history.

Discover the Historic Centre’s Heritage

Saint-Gilles’s historic centre has a network of heritage interpretation signs: panels, totems and information boards cover notable houses, remnants of the town’s fortifications, the port and various neighbourhoods. QR codes provide access to the information around the clock in five languages: French, English, German, Italian and Spanish. This allows you to choose individual topics for yourself, rather than focusing on just one aspect of the historic centre.

The free-to-download app “Le Chemin augmenté” complements this with audio content created in Saint-Gilles. The app offers discovery trails around the voie Régordane. The signs and app each have a different focus: the panels and information boards cover the historic centre, while the app guides you along routes around the voie Régordane.

Plan Ahead for Visiting Arrangements

Château d’Espeyran has retained its original furnishings and is set on a 13-hectare estate that includes a 7-hectare archaeological reserve. One important thing to know when planning a visit is that the château is not open to visitors on a permanent basis. Occasional events provide opportunities for the public to visit. Before travelling, check whether an event is scheduled that will allow you to visit.

Château d’Or et de Gueules offers a different way to experience the region: visitors are welcomed throughout the year for wine tastings and educational walks through the vineyards. If wine and winemaking are important to your trip, this is a distinct highlight alongside the abbey, museum and nature. Since visitor offerings should be checked again before your trip, it is best to find out whether the wine tasting or walk fits your plans.

Marais du Cougourlier: Circular Walk and Wetland

The “Autour du marais du Cougourlier” walk is a very easy 6.3-kilometre circular route with a stated duration of two hours. The distance and time give you a clear framework for planning your day, but check trail conditions before setting out. The Marais itself is a wetland rich in wildlife, with birds, fish, dragonflies, reeds and rushes. The natural landscape is shaped not only by its wildlife but also by the wetland’s characteristic vegetation.

The Marais du Cougourlier includes around 114 hectares designated as an “Espace Naturel Sensible Départemental” (Departmental Sensitive Natural Area). One of the objectives of this protected-area designation is to provide public access. The designation therefore also reflects public access as an objective of the category; for the walk itself, current trail conditions remain decisive.

Choose Saint-Gilles as Your Place to Stay

The Port de plaisance de Saint-Gilles is another point of interest, with direct access to the Canal du Rhône à Sète. Together with the abbey, museum, activities around the voie Régordane and the Marais, it offers a range of themes for a stay, without implying a set itinerary.

If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Gilles, you can plan your stay around the interests you actually want to include: heritage, the two-hour circular walk, or wine tastings and walks through the vineyards. In particular, bear in mind that Château d’Espeyran opens only occasionally, and check the arrangements for the walk and wine experiences in advance.
