Almost 48.77 metres high and built on three levels, the Pont du Gard is an aqueduct bridge that showcases Roman hydraulic engineering in a clearly legible form. The museum expands on this with insights into Roman water culture and aqueduct construction; immersive scenography brings both subjects to life. This striking structure thus combines with a cultural-historical perspective on water and technology. For visitors arriving on foot or by bicycle, access to the site is free. Check the latest access information before your visit, as operational details may change.
World Heritage at different scales
Four UNESCO World Heritage Sites are associated with Gard: the Pont du Gard, Saint-Gilles Abbey, the Maison Carrée in Nîmes and the Causses and Cévennes landscape. The selection ranges from individual buildings to an extensive cultural landscape. The UNESCO-listed Causses and Cévennes cultural landscape is a mountainous area with deep valleys, shaped by agro-pastoral systems and marked by drailles. This change of scale makes a difference when planning your trip: you can focus on individual buildings or choose an entire cultural landscape as your theme.
Cycling routes and getting around
The greenway network in Gard is reserved for non-motorised traffic, including cyclists, pedestrians and people travelling by scooter. Gard also has 120 kilometres of cycling routes. One greenway route follows the towpath of the Rhône–Sète Canal, connecting the marinas of Beaucaire and Saint-Gilles. The 120 kilometres give an idea of the extent of the cycling routes, while the canal route describes a specific stretch with two endpoints. Together, a total distance and a particular route offer different points of reference for planning your trip.
Wine and regional flavours
Gard has 13 AOP/AOC and five IGP wine designations. Wine tourism includes visits to wineries, tastings and walks through the vineyards. Each activity has a different focus: a winery visit centres on the estate, a tasting on the wine, and a walk on the vineyards. Regional specialities include Oignon doux des Cévennes, Figue de Vézénobres, Olivette du pays de Nîmes, Tavel wine and the Camargue bull. Oignon doux des Cévennes has AOC status, and its growing areas can be seen in the Cévennes landscape. Its designation of origin and visible fields link the product to two specific aspects of the region.
Activities and landscapes
Other activities include canoeing on the Cèze and horse riding in the Camargue. These examples offer different experiences: a water-based activity on the Cèze and exploring the Camargue on horseback. The Camargue gardoise has been designated a Grand Site de France. Gard is also associated with three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and four regional nature reserves. These landscape and nature designations add a distinct perspective on the region to the cultural and culinary aspects of a trip.
