Visitors planning a stay in Teyssieu can choose from a range of discoveries: the parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine retains medieval architectural features and has later stained-glass windows; the Musée de la Préhistoire du Ségala Quercynois introduces visitors to prehistoric finds; and a circular hike offers views over the Cère Valley on the return leg. Architecture, archaeology and outdoor activity provide three distinct highlights.

Church Architecture and Stained-Glass Windows

The apse and a straight bay of the 12th-century parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine have been preserved. An apse forms the end of the church interior; a bay is a section of the building defined by its structural divisions. These terms refer to two distinct parts of the medieval building. The church has been listed as a historic monument since November 23, 1992.

The signed and dated stained-glass windows add a much later historical layer. They date from 1886 to 1923 and are by Louis Gesta of Toulouse, L. V. Gesta, G. P. Dagrant of Bordeaux, and Henri Gesta of Toulouse. The windows therefore date from several centuries after the 12th-century church building. Visitors interested in architecture can view the building’s features and later stained glass as distinct historical layers.

Prehistory at the Museum

The Musée de la Préhistoire du Ségala Quercynois shifts the focus from building history to finds from the Neolithic and Paleolithic periods. They were discovered in the area of Teyssieu by Jean Tournier, a local resident with an interest in prehistory. Panels and maps present the archaeological sites, placing the exhibits in their temporal and geographical context. The museum’s finds are much older than the 12th-century church building.

The museum offers group visits by request throughout the year; admission is free and open to everyone. Check the seasonal arrangements in advance, especially if you are planning the visit as a fixed part of your itinerary.

The church and museum have different focuses: the church centers on the building’s features and stained-glass windows, while the museum focuses on archaeological finds and their sites. If you are planning a cultural visit, you can choose between architecture and prehistory.

Tower and Circular Hike

Following several phases of construction, completed by 2022, the Tour de Teyssieu is open to the public. Check locally for access arrangements before your visit.

The circular hike “De Teyssieu à Estal” is classified as a Promenades et Randonnées (PR) route, meaning a walking and hiking trail. On the return leg, it follows a high-level path with sweeping views over the Cère Valley. The route thus combines a clearly designated circular hike with a scenic return leg.
