Lot is associated with three Grands Sites d’Occitanie: Rocamadour-Vallée de la Dordogne, Figeac-Vallées du Lot et du Célé and Cahors-Vallée du Lot. The landscape, trails and culture offer many different ways to experience the destination. This is particularly evident in the Lot Valley: between Capdenac and Cahors, it cuts through the limestone hills of the Causses du Quercy. Karst erosion has shaped the cliffs there, whose colours range from white to ochre.

Walking through landscape and history

The castles, too, echo the landscape’s contours: many stand on rocky outcrops or accentuate the natural relief, becoming familiar landmarks. Those wishing to explore Lot on foot will find a network of 1,500 kilometres of marked trails, graded from very easy to difficult. Given the wide range, it is important to consider your own route carefully; check the route details before setting off.

Along interpretive trails in the Causses du Quercy, information panels share insights into geology, wildlife, plant life and local traditions. The GR651 offers a different perspective: it follows the Célé Valley and opens up views of cave villages and landscapes shaped by time. The GR6, meanwhile, makes it possible to include Rocamadour in a long-distance hike. This gives hikers with different plans a choice between a valley trail with views of the landscape and villages, and a route that could take them to Rocamadour.

You can also explore the area on the water: canoeing and kayaking trips, including multi-day outings, are available on the Dordogne, Célé and Lot rivers. Check providers and seasonal availability in advance. Natural swimming spots can be found along rivers and other bodies of water; some are supervised. As water quality and supervision vary by season, check the latest local information before swimming.

Bridges, villages and living culture

A striking riverside location is Saint-Cirq-Lapopie: the listed village sits on a cliff 100 metres above the Lot and is home to 13 historic monuments. Its traditional crafts include woodturning, associated with the historic roubinetaïres. Those interested in the history of pilgrimage will find another special landmark in Cahors: the medieval fortified Pont Valentré stands on the Via Podiensis and is considered an important crossing for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The bridge was built between 1308 and around 1380 to strengthen the city’s defences and facilitate trade. It is about a ten-minute walk from the centre of Cahors. The bridge is reserved for pedestrians, connects to a riverside path and is freely accessible year-round. Access may change temporarily during preservation work, so check for current updates before your visit.

Many villages in the Lot Valley are remarkably well preserved. Those who would also like to explore art, everyday history or regional traditions will find three museums in the department, with permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. They focus on visual arts, ethnology or history. At the Atelier-musée Jean Lurçat, an audio immersion brings the voices of the artist and his family members to life. At the same time, the rooms and furnishings preserve the atmosphere of the château and traces of Lurçat’s imagination.

Pech Merle brings together natural formations and early art: the site features a one-kilometre gallery with seven chambers, mineral formations, and prehistoric paintings and engravings. Check access conditions before your trip. Cahors wine, Rocamadour AOP cheese, black truffles from the Quercy, walnuts, saffron, melon, Quercy lamb and duck products are among the highlights of the region’s cuisine.

Getting around without a car

Lot can also be explored without a car: departmental train and bus networks serve Cahors, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Figeac, Rocamadour, Souillac and Gourdon. The liO Occitanie bus network provides a car-free connection between Cahors and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. It is worth checking routes, timetables and fares when planning, as services and seasonal options may change.
