A 200-metre path from a crossroads offers a panorama across the Causse and the village of Soulomès. There is also a commandery with a long history as an order’s property, a church with distinctive paintings, and a geocaching loop that passes through Soulomès on its return to the Causse. This gives you different ways to discover the place: local history, religious art, scenery and a route with a geocaching game. When planning your visit, the question is whether to focus first on the history of the place, the sequence of images or the view across the Causse.

The commandery and local history

The commandery in Soulomès belonged to the Hospitaller Order from the end of the 13th century. From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, it was the commander’s residence. These two aspects combine an institutional context with a specific function: the commandery belonged to the Order and served as the commander’s residence. It thus offers a distinct way to explore local history, different from the church’s religious imagery. Two dates are important for placing it in context: its association with the Hospitaller Order began at the end of the 13th century, while its use as the commander’s residence spanned the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The church and its paintings

The Church of Sainte-Madeleine in Soulomès was built in the 12th century. It was painted in two campaigns during the first half of the 16th century. The chancel and nave feature tempera paintings with a varied sequence of scenes, including the Incredulity of Saint Thomas, the Deposition from the Cross, Christ as the Gardener, Mary Magdalene, the Entombment and the Ascension. Another depiction shows a Knight of Malta paying homage to his liege lord.

The subjects bring together different kinds of imagery. Several scenes recount episodes from the life of Christ and of Mary Magdalene; alongside them, the homage scene adds a distinct focus on the relationship between a knight and his liege lord. The chronology is also noteworthy: the 12th-century church building was followed by the two painting campaigns in the first half of the 16th century. Visitors interested in historic churches will find both a long building history and a detailed, named array of paintings here.

Views and windmill remains

For a view of the surrounding area, a 200-metre path from a crossroads leads to a panorama across the Causse and the village of Soulomès. The short distance is a useful detail for planning, without specifying a walking time. Another feature of the landscape is the remains of two windmills: they stand on a rise on the Causse, just before the village. Together, the viewpoint and the windmill remains offer two different points of reference for the landscape around Soulomès—one a view across the village and the Causse, the other the visible remains of the windmills on the rise.

Geocaching on the Boucle du Vers

On its return to the Causse, the Boucle du Vers en Géocaching passes through Soulomès. It is signposted with cycling loop markers bearing the letter A. The geocaching game uses a guidebook; you can also use a GPS device or smartphone to find four virtual caches and one physical final cache. The types of cache distinguish the stops: four virtual destinations are followed by a physical finale. The loop thus combines a signposted cycling route with a search supported by the guidebook and optional devices.

The loop is therefore a different way to include Soulomès in your travel plans from the church paintings or the viewpoint: here, the focus is on the route and cache hunt, while the other options highlight art, local history and scenery. This distinction can help you choose what to focus on during your stay, without assuming a particular duration or fixed order for exploring the different themes.
