A listed organ dating from 1845 and Byzantine-style domes make the Abbatiale Sainte-Marie a tangible point of interest for culture enthusiasts. Souillac also offers walking routes, activities on the Dordogne and a local speciality to suit different travel interests. For your planning, set market days, seasonal offerings and the stated walking times can help you choose what to focus on.

Abbatiale and Beffroi: Souillac’s cultural history

The Abbatiale Sainte-Marie is a 12th-century church. Its architectural features include Byzantine-style domes; it also has a listed organ dating from 1845. The founding of the priory or deanery of Sainte-Marie is said to date back to 909. A visit thus combines a specific detail of the church’s furnishings with a far-reaching, though cautiously worded, account of its foundation.

The Beffroi Saint-Martin reflects a different period: a decree dated 22 April 1925 placed it under protection. Every autumn, in October and November, its nave hosts an exhibition of contemporary art as part of the “Résurgence” festival; the programme has been running since 2017. If this exhibition is an important reason for your trip, check the specific dates before making plans.

Walking routes and longer stages

The Circuit découverte de Souillac is a circular route starting from the Plaine des Jeux. It is more than six kilometres long, takes about three hours and is suitable for families and pushchairs. The Circuit des Viaducs runs along the outskirts of Souillac, is 12.5 kilometres long and is estimated to take around three and a half hours. According to the stated times, the longer loop takes only about half an hour more. You can therefore compare the two routes using their stated distances and approximate durations.

Another route option is the 24-kilometre Cazoulès–Sarlat Greenway. It connects Cazoulès with Sarlat and can be accessed via Souillac; Cazoulès is three kilometres from Souillac. Souillac is an access point to the route, not its stated starting point. For a longer hike, the Lot section of the Chemin d’Amadour follows the Souillac–Rocamadour stage. It is approximately 25 kilometres long and can be completed in one day or spread over two days at a slower pace. Distance and duration may vary depending on route conditions; also check access conditions before setting out.

Dordogne experiences and seasonal offerings

You can take a canoe trip on the Dordogne from Souillac, starting at Base Copeyre. If you prefer a guided discovery, consider the “Les Mystères de la Ville” tour: the character Petit Pierre, a young boatman, accompanies visitors on an approximately one-and-a-half-hour exploration of life along the Dordogne, Souillac and its trades. The tour is suitable for children aged six and over. Check in advance whether this tour format is being offered and what booking conditions apply.

Quercyland is a water park in Souillac with five swimming pools, waterslides, a high ropes course and inflatable games. This combination sets it apart from the cultural sites and outdoor routes. Check opening hours and seasonal information before visiting.

Friday morning, local crafts and Vieille Prune

Souillac’s traditional market and fair take place every Friday morning from 8 a.m. to noon in the old town centre. If you would like to experience the market, Friday morning is a clear reference point for planning your trip. The regular schedule can also be combined with a visit to cultural sites or another focus for your stay, without implying a set itinerary.

Maison Louis Roque has maintained its traditional craftsmanship in Souillac since 1905. Its museum offers a free, self-guided tour about the history of the house and its traditional crafts. Vieille Prune is the house speciality. This offers a tangible insight into the history of local production without presenting the museum visit as a guided tour or an additional offering.

For a hike, by contrast, the approximate duration matters, as does whether you want to walk the Souillac–Rocamadour stage in one or two days. This lets you balance culture, local production and outdoor activity according to the focus of your trip.
