Saint-Cirq-Madelon brings together diverse cultural and natural attractions. Cultural highlights include the Église Saint-Georges and the archaeological site of Gisement du Roc de la Cave; outdoors, a wetland and hiking and cycling trails take center stage. If you’re planning a stay, you can focus on art and history or on scenery and outdoor activities.

Church and Cultural Heritage

The Église Saint-Georges contains 600 m² of Romanesque frescoes covering all the interior walls. The nave was decorated in the 18th century with calligraphic motifs that imitate a tapestry. Some of the nave walls may date from the late 12th or early 13th century. The church therefore brings together several layers of art history: the possible early building phase, the Romanesque frescoes, and the later decoration.

The Retable de la Vierge is in the south chapel. Its lower parts—the pedestal, altar, and altar step—date from the 19th century. The side panels depict scenes from the Passion of Christ: Christ on the Mount of Olives, the Flagellation, Christ on his way to the soldiers, and the Veil of Saint Veronica. The furnishings thus offer contrasting scales: large-scale frescoes on the interior walls and individual Passion scenes on the retable’s side panels. If you would like to see the retable, check access in advance with the church or tourist office.

Another point of cultural and historical interest is the archaeological site of Gisement du Roc de la Cave in Saint-Cirq-Madelon. It has been classified as a Monument historique since December 23, 1929.

Wetland and Trails

The Marais de Saint Cirq Madelon is an unusual wetland in the Lot department, set amid a landscape characterized by the Causses. On a nature walk in the marsh, you can discover birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and remarkable flora. The walk draws attention to both the wildlife and plant life, as well as the distinctive wetland environment within this landscape.

The Sentier de la Falaise is 5.33 km long; the estimated walking time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on your pace. The trail is associated with Saint-Cirq-Madelon’s classified natural landscapes, characterized by forests, meadows, and gentle paths.

The 21 km Véloroute Promenade en Bouriane has an access point in the village of Saint-Cirq-Madelon. It runs through the heart of the Marcilhande valley, which is listed as a protected group of monuments. Check current route conditions and access information before setting out.

The routes differ in length and time commitment, which can help you choose an activity: the Sentier de la Falaise is considerably shorter than the Véloroute, and an approximate walking time that depends on your pace is also given for the hiking trail. This lets you assess the hike by its estimated duration and the cycling route by its length, without treating the two measures as equivalent.
