Meyronne between the river valley and the Causses

Meyronne lies on the Dordogne, in a valley dominated by rocks and cliffs. The commune also includes parts of the limestone plateaus of Quercy and the Causses found there. This creates a marked contrast between the river valley and the limestone landscape. If you are considering Meyronne as a destination, you can plan around your interests in these varied landscapes.

Cycling route and the Dordogne

The La Vagabonde V87 cycling route passes through Meyronne. Here, it runs between limestone cliffs and along the Dordogne. This provides a specific route through the town that links the river and the cliffs. The route can therefore be considered a distinct focus alongside the river valley and the Causses landscapes.

Canoeing on the Dordogne

An August 2026 tourism listing names Copeyre Canoë as having a base in Meyronne and offering canoe trips on the Dordogne with a free shuttle. Check the current operating arrangements before making plans.

The canoe stretch from Meyronne to Lacave passes through a valley characterized by trees, meadows and farmland. The canoes then travel past the striking rock formation of Rochers de Monge, alongside the cliffs. This description of the stretch differs from that of the V87: for the cycling route, the passage through Meyronne and the route between the limestone cliffs and the Dordogne are highlighted; for the canoe stretch, it is the succession of valley landscapes and cliffs on the way to Lacave.

Traces of the fortified town

In the former medieval fortified town center, remains of the castle and fortifications have been incorporated into various buildings. The structural remains are thus spread across several parts of the town, giving the historic center its distinctive character.

The Église de Meyronne was built in 1881 within the former enclosure of the bishop’s castle. It is listed as a Monument historique. Notable features include an episcopal chapel with an elegant vault and five capitals decorated with scenes of people and animals, as well as foliage motifs. Its history and furnishings offer different ways to appreciate the church as part of Meyronne’s historic heritage.

Rocher Sainte-Marie and the garden

A small path through the boxwoods leads to the chapel at Rocher Sainte-Marie; visitors can even ring the bell there. As path conditions may vary, it is advisable to check them before visiting.

At the top of Rocher Sainte-Marie is a cave with an oratory dedicated to the Vierge du Rocher. Its origins are attributed to the early Middle Ages. The chapel with its bell and the oratory each offer a distinct point of interest at Rocher Sainte-Marie.

The Jardin de l’Ancien Couvent brings together plants from the Mesozoic Era in a garden overlooking the Dordogne. Alongside the cliffs and historic buildings, it offers another way to experience the town: through a collection of plants and views of the river.
