Lanzac stretches for around ten kilometres along the Dordogne. The river has gravel banks and a few beaches; marked hiking trails also run through the area. The river landscape, walking and culture offer different focuses for planning a trip. You do not have to turn them into a fixed itinerary: simply choosing which theme you would like to spend more time on can give you a different perspective on the activities on offer.

River landscape and natural environment

The ZNIEFF Vallée de la Dordogne quercynoise includes Lanzac but describes a larger area. The habitats recorded there include running waters, riparian woodland, hay meadows, alluvial banks, floodplain grasslands, oxbow lakes and tall-herb communities. The inventory also lists the dry limestone slopes of the Causses du Quercy, with dry grasslands, rocks, gorge woodlands, thermophilous scrub and scree slopes. The description thus ranges from water-shaped floodplains to dry limestone landscapes. Those interested in nature will find several types of habitat here, rather than just a single kind of landscape.

The banks of the Dordogne and the marked hiking trails offer different ways to explore the area: the river, with its gravel banks and a few beaches, is one focus, while the trails offer a way to include hikes in your stay.

Fishing and activities in the Lot

Fish and Gites offers fishing lessons on the Dordogne and takes visitors to fishing spots. This is another way to get to know the river through a guided fishing activity. Booking and operating conditions may change, so check in advance which conditions apply on your chosen date.

The 12th edition of Roc Lanzagais is a sports day open to everyone, held around Rocamadour. The programme includes mountain biking, hiking, trail running and gravel routes through the landscapes of the Lot. The event therefore offers a range of ways to cycle and run. Check the dates and routes for the specific edition before making plans.

Another option is a free farm visit at Ferme de Grézelade. It includes a demonstration of force-feeding and a demonstration with a sheepdog. If you plan to visit, check the current arrangements in advance, as the organisation may change.

Churches and architectural history

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Lanzac has a single-aisled nave, two transept-shaped chapels and a polygonal apse. The description identifies three specific parts of the church: the main space extending lengthwise, the chapels arranged crosswise and the many-sided end. For anyone interested in architecture, these features illustrate the church’s layout.

The Church of Saint-Barthélemy in Cieurac has a different history. After the medieval castle burned down, it was almost entirely rebuilt in 1875. The church contains numerous engraved floor slabs, some of which date from the 17th century; the stained-glass windows date from 1844 to 1887. The rebuilding, floor slabs and windows reflect different historical periods. Check with the authorities in Lanzac about access for visitors before your visit.
