In Lalbenque, truffle events, historic buildings and hikes offer very different ways to explore. If you choose the town for a trip, you can plan your visit around a seasonal market day or one of the festivals—and explore its cultural and landscape features independently of those events.

Truffle market and festivals at different times of year

The wholesale truffle market takes place every Tuesday from December to March. Its season is therefore clearly limited; check the specific market dates before your trip. The visitor program at the market includes a truffle tasting with a participating restaurant business that is a member of the SRG, held under the town hall’s covered market from 1:30 p.m.; check the exact program time before your trip. There is also a wine tasting with a winemaker. The program times may change.

The truffle festival takes place at a different time: it is held every year on the last weekend in January. Recurring features include food events, truffle-hunting competitions, conferences, demonstrations, discovery walks and exhibitions. The festival thus offers different ways to explore the subject—from food and demonstrations to outdoor activities. If you are traveling specifically for the festival, check the exact dates before your trip.

A truffle dish is also the focus in summer: the giant truffle omelette event takes place every year on the last Tuesday evening in July and has been running for more than ten years. Each year, more than 600 guests gather to taste the omelette with regional cheese, pastries, wine and melon. The market, January weekend and July evening are clearly distinct occasions to plan around; the July event should not be confused with the winter weekly market.

Saint-Quirin Church and stone landmarks

Saint-Quirin Church was completely rebuilt in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century. Its broad nave has six rib-vaulted chapels, and its five-sided choir is supported by buttresses. The church also houses a remarkable altarpiece and 17th-century woodwork from the Carthusian monastery in Cahors. The architecture and furnishings offer two different perspectives: the form of the church interior and the history of its artworks.

The church’s fortifications appear to have been built at the same time as the reconstruction. They made Saint-Quirin one of the defensive elements of Lalbenque’s town wall. This remains a possible historical connection: the features appear to date from the same period, rather than being definitively dated to the time of the reconstruction.

The Caselle de Nouel is another example of rural architecture. Built around 1850, it is the region’s tallest caselle at 5.45 meters. Its enclosure was used to shelter the flock during bad weather or to gather animals for care and counting. Around 30 sheep and lambs could be gathered there. The structure can thus be considered not only for its height but also for its specific agricultural function.

Hiking amid geology and rural architecture

The 10.8-kilometer hike combines geology and rural architecture. Landscape features include prehistoric dolmens, historic dry-stone walls, century-old oak trees and fragrant truffle plantations. The hike also leads to well-preserved gariottes and caselles, castles, and the Fontaine de La Rouquette. Nature and architecture are thus found side by side along the same route; the stated distance is a practical planning reference, not a walking time.

The event dates can help you choose when to travel, while the church, caselle and hike offer other ways to spend your stay. Check the market or festival dates in advance if either is the reason for your trip, and take trail conditions into account when planning your hike.
