Frayssinet-Le-Gélat combines a rich architectural history with opportunities for hiking and cycling. In summer, supervised recreational swimming is also available. For planning your trip, the different routes and the seasonal swimming period are particularly useful: at a glance, you can see which activities require a specific time of year or a check of current route information.
Sainte-Radegonde and its architectural history
The church of Sainte-Radegonde was first mentioned in 1152. Its surviving Romanesque apse may date from the second half of the 12th century. During the rebuilding from 1873 to 1875, the old apse was retained as the entrance portal; the bell tower was added later, between 1885 and 1888. The church thus brings together an older building element and several clearly distinguishable phases of construction.
The apse is semicircular and has a domed vault. Sculpted capitals have also been preserved. The term “domed vault” describes the apse vault’s dome-like shape and adds another architectural detail to the description of its ground plan. The church also houses the reliquary of Saint Loup, which contains ex ossibus relics—that is, bone relics. The neo-Gothic, mass-produced reliquary may date from the late 19th or early 20th century. This dating is deliberately left open; its time period is uncertain.
Another historical landmark is the Château de Bargade. Its main construction phase is attributed to the first half of the 14th century; a construction phase from the 19th century is also recorded. This makes it possible to explore the area’s architectural history beyond the church, without combining the different dates into a single construction phase.
Plan hikes and tours
The GR 652 runs as a stage from Salviac to Frayssinet-Le-Gélat. It is 19.5 kilometres long and takes 5 hours 30 minutes. The Circuit des Trois Communes is an 18.5-kilometre hiking route that starts in Frayssinet-Le-Gélat. The nearly identical distances represent different choices: a stage between two places, or a route that starts in the village. Check the current GPX track and conditions before setting out.
The Circuit des Trois Communes follows forest paths along the Thèze stream and through chestnut groves. It is also open to horse riders and mountain bikers. The route therefore offers several designated ways to enjoy it, while its described course also provides specific points of reference in the landscape. By contrast, the GR 652 is described as a stage connecting Salviac with Frayssinet-Le-Gélat, with a stated duration. The routes can therefore be compared by their length and course and—in the case of the GR 652—by the stated walking time, without inferring a difficulty rating.
Quercy Outdoor lists Frayssinet-Le-Gélat as one of its main bases for trail running, mountain biking, hiking, cycling tours and gravel biking. The Quercy Outdoor base offers bicycle repairs and luggage transport. If you plan to rely on one of these services during a tour, confirm its current availability in advance. This allows you to take the different activities mentioned into account when planning, without assuming that a service will be available.
Summer recreational swimming
The Plan d'eau du Moulin Bas offers supervised recreational swimming every afternoon in summer. This is a seasonal option alongside hiking and cycling tours. Exact dates and supervision periods may vary from year to year, so check the times that apply to your visit before travelling. This makes a practical difference when choosing your travel dates: swimming is available in summer, while routes should be planned using their own distance information and current conditions.
