Explore Espedaillac through two easy circular trails and the history of sheep farming. The caselles along the Sentier de la Brebis show how closely the Causse landscape is linked to this way of life; a 17th-century church and the Fête de la brebis add a cultural and historical perspective. When planning, consider the practical differences in walking time and distance alongside the area’s architectural and local history.

Two circular trails, different walking times

The Sentier de la Brebis is an easy circular walk starting in Espedaillac. It is 3.9 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk. Un paysage façonné par la brebis also starts in Espedaillac and is rated as an easy circular walk. At 7.1 kilometres and approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, it is the longer of the two routes; the stated walking times differ by about an hour. This makes it easy to choose based on your preferred walking time and distance. The longer route is also accessible to mountain bikes and horse riders, and has information panels interpreting the trail.

Sheep farming and caselles

The Sentier de la Brebis presents the cultural heritage associated with sheep farming and explains how it has shaped the landscapes of the Causse. The Caussenarde sheep breed, also known as the “sheep with glasses,” is particularly characteristic of this area. Caselles stand along the trail: huts built entirely from dry stone, without mortar. Most were built in the 19th century, primarily to house and care for animals. They were also used to store tools, grain or wine, and to provide shelter from the weather. Their construction and varied uses offer a tangible insight into the work associated with sheep farming.

Festival and local history

The FĂŞte de la brebis is a traditional festival in Espedaillac dedicated to the Caussenarde sheep breed. The 13th edition of the FĂŞte de la brebis was planned for 2026, to be organised by local breeders, the municipality of Espedaillac and its heritage commission. The programme announced for 2026 also included a guided walk on the Sentier de la Brebis. It was intended to highlight the economic, ecological and cultural-historical importance of sheep farming. Check the dates and programme before travelling, as future dates and programme details may change.

The Église Saint-Blaise d'Espédaillac also relates a specific historical episode: the former church was completely destroyed by the Huguenots in 1573. In the 17th century, the commander at the time, Balthazar Fraissac, had the church rebuilt. While the caselles tell of practical tasks related to livestock farming, the church brings the destruction and rebuilding of the area’s history into focus.

Regional cuisine

Dishes from regional producers were announced for the 2026 festival programme, including cabécous, sheep’s cheese, ice cream and pizza, as well as poultry and spit-roasted lamb. Participating producers may change. In Espedaillac, the Auberge Beauville is recommended for generous, authentic, local cuisine. Check before visiting whether the restaurant is open and what is currently on offer.
