Aynac brings together historic buildings and different ways to explore independently. At the Église Saint-Geniès, architectural features and historical context stand out; Pont Carral points to the road’s former use. There is also a downloadable village discovery tour and a sporty cycling loop. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Aynac, you can weigh up whether cultural history, discovering the village or cycling should be your main focus.

The architectural features of the Église Saint-Geniès

The Église Saint-Geniès has an octagonal bell tower on a square base; the building is covered with lauzes. Octagonal means eight-sided: the tower and base therefore represent two clearly distinct geometric shapes. Lauzes are stone slabs used as roofing. The shape and material offer concrete points of reference when looking at the church. The choir and transept appear to date from the late 12th century. The transept lies across the church’s main axis, while the choir denotes the liturgical area. This dating adds to the architectural features and applies specifically to these two parts of the building. Saint-Geniès thus combines a description of its architectural form with a cautiously worded historical context.

Pont Carral and former roads

Pont Carral leads to another aspect of local history. It lies on the former road to Saint-Jean-Lagineste and Saint-Céré; in the past, carts crossed the bridge. Unlike at the Église Saint-Geniès, the focus here is not on architectural form but on the former road route and how it was used. For travellers interested in history, the bridge thus complements the architectural history with a glimpse of earlier mobility.

Landscape and independent exploration

Aynac lies in the Limargue region between the Causses and the Ségala, where you can admire a variety of natural landscapes. The sporty “Nature et Découverte” cycling loop starts in Aynac and leads to the heights of the Lot and the foothills of the Massif Central.

A downloadable tour is available for discovering the village. Its main difference from “Nature et Découverte” is its focus: here, the emphasis is on discovering the village, while the other is a cycling loop described as sporty, with its named landscape features. This lets you choose according to the activity you want, rather than planning around just one aspect of the place. Check the route details before setting off: information about the route may change over time, and checking the latest details will help you better assess the sporty cycling loop for your stay.

In January 2024, as part of the “Une carte Un village” initiative, Aynac was one of seven routes described as operational.
