In Autoire, you can tailor your hiking plans to the distance, duration and starting point. The village also offers several distinct themes for exploring its architectural history—from a fortified church to chapel paintings and houses that define the village centre.

Hiking Between the Village Centre and the Reculée

The Circuit de la reculée d’Autoire is a moderately difficult 5.6 km hiking trail. The route is listed as taking around 2 hours and 30 minutes, with 239 metres of elevation gain. You can take the duration and elevation profile into account when planning. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

From the village centre, a paved path follows the left bank of the Autoire stream towards the waterfall. Along the way, a signposted trail branches off towards the Château des Anglais and the Roque d’Autoire; a circular route is possible beyond the waterfall. Another suggested starting point is the car park on the edge of the village, from where an approximately 1.2 km hiking trail leads to the Cascade d’Autoire.

Waterfall, Natural Area and Climbing Cliffs

The Reculée d’Autoire is a pronounced indentation in the limestone plateau of the Causse de Gramat and a Sensitive Natural Area (Espace Naturel Sensible). The hike through the Reculée leads to a waterfall, an exceptional viewpoint from the cliff edge and historic monuments. The area around the Cascade d’Autoire is also a Sensitive Natural Area and is home to notable plant and animal species. The Cascade is 30 m high and the tallest waterfall in the Lot department.

If you’re planning to climb as well as hike, the cliffs of Autoire offer a major climbing area with more than 150 routes. Check route availability locally. This gives you a choice of different activities to plan for, without assuming that the number of routes says anything about their current usability.

Architectural History on a Village Walk

The village walk takes visitors to the area’s notable architectural landmarks and natural features. A group of houses, most of which were built after the Hundred Years’ War, defines the outlines of the village centre. The Église Saint-Pierre d’Autoire was fortified during the Hundred Years’ War to serve as a place of refuge. The apse features sculpted corbels with geometric motifs, human figures and animal depictions; inside, capitals and column bases are among the elements decorated with ornamentation.

The Chapelle Saint-Roch offers another glimpse into the area’s history: it was built in the 15th century, probably as a votive offering after a plague epidemic. The chapel contains heavily damaged 15th-century wall paintings, including a depiction of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The Chapelle Saint-Roch is listed as a Monument historique. The Roque d’Autoire has also been protected as a Monument historique since 1925.

Events Throughout the Year

In Autoire, the Feux de la Saint-Jean are traditionally celebrated on the Saturday or Sunday after the Fête de la musique; residents are invited to prepare sweets. The gourmet market generally takes place on the first Sunday in August. Outdoors, visitors can enjoy picnics, tastings or meals prepared by local producers. As event dates may vary from year to year, check the dates for your travel year before your trip.
