Juzet-de-Luchon combines a 40-metre-high waterfall with hiking trails described as either an easy circular route or a challenging one-way route. The area also features notable local heritage sites. When planning, it is therefore worth considering the different route types and elevation gains, as well as the sights that offer a focus beyond hiking.

Waterfall and Hiking Trails

The Cascade de Juzet is in the village of Juzet-de-Luchon. It plunges through a cleft in the brown shale and is 40 metres high. There is a picnic table at the waterfall, and the spot is appreciated for its coolness in summer. The Cascade can be reached on foot from Luchon railway station in less than 40 minutes.

The easy Les Granges de Hayroles hike starts just before the waterfall. The 6-kilometre circular route includes 330 metres of elevation gain; the stated walking time is three hours. It crosses a small bridge to Sode and returns to Juzet-de-Luchon via the GR10. Along the way, there is a viewpoint overlooking the Luchon valley and the high mountains.

Two Routes with Different Levels of Difficulty

By contrast, the De Juzet Ă  Artigue Par le GR10 route is rated difficult and runs for 5 kilometres one way, with 640 metres of elevation gain. It starts at the edge of the village on the Route de Sode. Before Sode, it crosses the road six times, passes through the forest to the ruins of Houssets, and then continues to Artigue.

The comparison shows why distance alone says little about the nature of a hike: the shorter distance refers to the difficult one-way route with 640 metres of elevation gain, while the easy circular route covers 6 kilometres and 330 metres of elevation gain. The type of route is also important when planning. A walking time of three hours is stated for Les Granges de Hayroles; for the hike to Artigue, you should take into account that it is a one-way route.

Church, Memorial and Waterwheel

The present-day Church of Saint Blaise et Sainte-Eulalie was rebuilt in 1860 after an earlier Romanesque church was destroyed in the 1540 flood. Municipal information boards explain the history of the recently restored church. The Croix d’Estirouns was erected and inaugurated as part of efforts to enhance Juzet-de-Luchon’s heritage. Opposite the town hall, the statue of Notre-Dame des Victoires commemorates the 1859 mission.

The Château de Bazus is another notable building in the village. It dates from the late 19th century; its romantic appearance is reminiscent of Viollet-le-Duc. The château stands on the left bank of the Salens and overlooks the Luchon valley.

The La roue à aubes waterwheel used the stream’s power to drive a former carpentry workshop. When the water flow is low, it can turn without requiring a water supply. An aromatic garden with fragrant plants has also been created behind a building. Information boards explain the various aromatic plants found in the region.

A Cycling Route with Valley Views

For a cycling trip, the Cycl - Montée d’Artigue Depuis Juzet-de-Luchon starts on the D46 at the edge of the village. In the final kilometre, the route offers views of the Luchon valley and the surrounding peaks. Cycling and hiking thus complement the heritage sites, offering different ways to discover the landscape and the village.
