Argut-Dessous offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: the Romanesque Chapelle Notre-Dame d'Argut-Dessous stands on a rocky outcrop; hiking trails cross ridges or pass through woodland to a viewpoint overlooking the Garonne Valley. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether culture, hiking or views of the landscape should be the main focus. This will help you give each of these features the emphasis that best suits your travel interests.

Romanesque chapel on a rocky outcrop

The Romanesque architecture and rocky setting shape the Chapelle Notre-Dame d'Argut-Dessous in different ways. Its position on the outcrop creates a striking connection with the surrounding landscape, while its status as a Romanesque chapel gives a visit a clear cultural focus. If you would like to experience culture and landscape on the same visit, these two features can serve as a guide. The statue Vierge à l'Enfant is located in a niche beside the entrance to the walled enclosure. If you would like to see it, check local access arrangements before your visit.

Circular trails with different highlights

The Boucle d'Argut runs along the ridges between Argut-dessous and Argut-dessus. In Argut-Dessous, the circular hike reaches the church and the small cemetery. The route thus combines the ridgeline with named destinations in the village, offering a change between landscape and points of local interest.

The Boucle de Saint-Béat-Lez à Fos also passes through Argut-dessous. The route first leads through woodland and then to a viewpoint overlooking the Garonne Valley. The circular trail was revised in May 2022. Compared with the Boucle d'Argut, this route focuses on the transition from woodland to valley views; the other route is shaped by its crossing of the ridges. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions and markings.

Distant views and a gorge

From the Mail de Chourbas, there are views of the Garonne Valley, Arlos, Fos, Saint-Béat, the Maladetta Massif and Pic du Midi de Bigorre. These named destinations give the viewpoint its own character: alongside the valley, the view takes in several places and mountain features.

The Chute du Rimbach waterfall is 20 metres high and lies in a wild gorge. As a landscape feature, it draws attention to the waterfall and gorge, while the view from the Mail de Chourbas takes in several named destinations. The two landscapes therefore offer different experiences: here, the gorge and its waterfall; there, views of the valley, places and mountain ranges.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a holiday rental in Argut-Dessous, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore the chapel and places of interest in the village, or would you prefer one of the circular hiking trails?
