Frontignan-Savès is a village in the fertile valley of the Aussoue. When looking for a holiday rental and planning your stay, two themes offer a practical starting point: the architectural history of the church and Château Saint-Orens, and the moderately challenging Sentier de Mauvezin circular hiking route. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay more on local history, hiking, or a combination of both.

Church and local history

The church in Frontignan-Savès has been protected as a historic monument since 26 March 1973. Its bell gable is supported by buttresses and pierced by three arcades. Here, arcades are the arched openings in the bell gable; buttresses are the structural supports. The three openings make the design easy to describe, while the buttresses show how the gable is supported.

In 1246, the village was under the lordship of Savès; it was first mentioned in 1350. The present-day Château Saint-Orens followed an earlier fortification and dates from the early 16th century. One bell bears the year 1502. The dates 1246 and 1350 refer respectively to the village’s lordship and its first mention; 1502, by contrast, is a date inscribed on a bell.

Château Saint-Orens

Remains of a medieval predecessor building, as well as a drawbridge and a portcullis, were discovered beneath Château Saint-Orens; the former moats have since been filled in. The square tower has defensive openings. The château also contains a staircase dated 1657, with steps carved from a single piece of oak. This brings discoveries connected with a medieval predecessor building together with specific architectural details of the château.

Hiking as a separate activity

The Sentier de Mauvezin is an 11.4-kilometre, moderately challenging circular hiking route that passes through Frontignan-Savès. Its length and difficulty rating make it a hike in its own right, not a short stroll. If you plan to hike it, check current route conditions before setting off; they can change. On 28 April 2026, hiking trails in the municipality were added to the departmental plan for walking and hiking routes (PDIPR).

The wider landscape

The Collines gasconnes du Savès form a transition zone between the Pyrenees and Gascony. This wider landscape includes narrower river valleys, hills, meadows, remaining wooded areas and extensive cultivated fields. This offers two perspectives when choosing where to stay: the specific landmarks in Frontignan-Savès and the wider landscape of the Collines.
