Montclar combines a central village square with a distinctive townscape. The Place aux Arcades is lined with stone houses, one side of which features arcades. You can also plan hikes from Montclar: the village is a starting point for named trails, including the Des Sources aux Étoiles circular route. If you’d like to combine village architecture and hiking, Montclar offers some specific places to start.

Hiking from Montclar

Two trails differ right from the start: the marked Saint-Igest hiking trail begins in the village, while the Des Sources aux Étoiles circular route starts at the Place aux Arcades. This circular route is listed as 21.6 kilometres long, with 820 metres of elevation gain. The distance describes the length of the route, while the elevation gain indicates the ascent; together, these figures help you gauge the scale of the hike. The circular route follows the D60 to the viewpoint. Along the way, it passes the Puech de Monclar and the Monts de Lacaune, goes by viewpoints and through tunnels, and follows a river. Check current trail conditions locally before planning your route.

Views and Orientation

In clear weather, the Montclar viewpoint offers views across the deep valleys of the Ségala and the rolling Rougier. Further away lie the Monts de Lacaune, the Lévezou and the Larzac; to the east, the Massif de l'Aigoual is clearly visible. The circular route leads to this viewpoint. It is useful to distinguish between the two when planning: the waypoint is part of the route, but the distant views depend on clear weather. You can treat the route as a fixed feature and the panorama as a weather-dependent possibility.

Maps of the local hiking trails are displayed on information boards at the Place de Montclar and in Saint-Igest, and are also available from the Réquistanais tourist office. Check before your trip whether the hiking maps are available.

Townscape, Church and Festival Calendar

The side with the arcades creates an architectural contrast with the stone houses lining the square. The parish church’s history includes several specific references to 1849: a replica of a religious painting was deposited there, and the church had only recently been reconstructed at the time. Its bell tower also bears the year 1849. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste also houses two paintings from the 19th century that have been classified as protected; both have been restored. The specific year 1849 and the classification of the paintings as dating from the 19th century are two separate details.

Montclar’s festival takes place on the penultimate weekend of July. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, confirm the exact dates for that year in advance.
