Situated on the heights of the Ségala Plateau, Moyrazès lies at an elevation of around 700 metres. The village combines a rich church history with striking buildings and hiking trails, whose time commitments are easy to compare. This allows you to decide before choosing your stay whether to focus on historic architecture, a hike or views across the landscape.

Church History and Architectural Styles

The Church of Saint-Médard was built in 1341 by the Bishop of Rodez as a castle chapel for his summer residence, which he had established there. On 5 August 1526, François d’Estaing authorised a partial reconstruction; the work was to be funded by a voluntary taille tax. The building’s history thus encompasses both its founding as a chapel and later construction work.

The church in Moyrazès is a 16th-century Gothic building with a pentagonal choir. This architectural description sits alongside the older founding history of Saint-Médard. The choir is a specific detail that offers a closer look at the building’s design. There is also an oratory on the heights of Moyrazès, on the site of a former windmill. A walk around the village also takes in the former seigneurial prison complex. These buildings offer different historical points of interest without needing to be combined into a fixed sightseeing route.

Pont de Comencau and Access

Pont de Comencau is a 15th-century bridge over the Aveyron. It is part of the GR62B and lies within the territory of the communes of Moyrazès and Druelle. Access to the bridge is subject to a clear restriction: from the roadside parking area near the hamlet of Caufour, the route leads exclusively on foot or by mountain bike along an unpaved path. Check local conditions before visiting; trail conditions can also change.

This makes the visit different from a stop right by the roadside: the final stretch is intended to be covered on foot or by mountain bike. If you want to include Pont de Comencau in your plans, take this access method and the unpaved surface into account. Its place on the GR62B also identifies it as part of a hiking trail, without specifying a particular route or walking time to the bridge.

Compare Hiking Trails by Time Required

The Cantagrel–La Maresque hiking trail is 9 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Les Planques–Aiguesvives trail covers 9.5 kilometres and takes about 3 hours; a variant extends it to 19 kilometres and about 6 hours. The two main routes are similar in length, but their stated durations differ by roughly half an hour. Les Planques–Aiguesvives also offers a clear step up to a longer variant: both the distance and the time roughly double.

Another option is the Moulin d’Ayssens–Pont de Moyrazès trail. The basic route is listed as taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. The variants cover 8.2 kilometres in 2 hours and 45 minutes, 9 kilometres in 3 hours, or 12.5 kilometres in 4 hours. This lets you compare the available time commitments before choosing one of the hiking options. Distances and variants for these trails may change, so check current conditions before setting out.

Elevation and Panoramic Views

Its location at an elevation of around 700 metres on the heights of the Ségala Plateau gives Moyrazès its landscape setting. In clear weather, the panoramic view can include Rodez, the Cantal, Aubrac, the Palanges, the Lévézou and even the Pyrenees. The view is explicitly dependent on good visibility; the places listed are therefore not guaranteed to be visible on every visit.

Moyrazès thus offers several different interests to consider when choosing your stay: the architectural history of Saint-Médard, other historical landmarks in the village, the medieval bridge and hiking trails with a range of distances and time commitments. If you mainly want to explore on foot, compare the stated durations and bear in mind the unpaved access to Pont de Comencau. If architecture and local history are your priority, the church, oratory and former prison complex provide specific topics to explore in Moyrazès.
