Niderviller combines a long history of faïencerie with boat trips that can be hired from the town for half a day or a full day. Historical development and practical itinerary planning therefore offer two different ways to explore the area. For a short trip, you can decide in advance which focus you would like to give more time to.
Faïencerie: History and Visiting
The first Faïencerie de Niderviller manufactory was established in 1735. After a fire, the faïencerie was rebuilt between 1754 and 1756 to produce hard-paste porcelain. In 1772, “Terre de Pipe” was created, contributing significantly to the Manufacture de Niderviller’s reputation today. This sequence of dates distinguishes the manufactory’s early beginnings from its rebuilding and a later development. Another aspect of this heritage is that part of the faïencerie is listed as a historic monument. Individual visitors can explore the outdoor areas on a self-guided visit. Baroque Church and Vierge des Faïenciers
Niderviller’s church complements its industrial history with a Baroque building and a reconstructed figure. The current bell tower was built in 1762 and is considered unique in the region. The church houses the Vierge des Faïenciers, reconstructed in 1991. During the reconstruction, missing parts of the mould were added using the same production and decoration techniques as in the original creation. The 1762 tower dates to after the faïencerie’s rebuilding between 1754 and 1756, and before the creation of “Terre de Pipe” in 1772. This timeline connects the building with the manufactory’s history without equating the two subjects. Comparing the tower and the manufactory shows that Niderviller’s cultural history encompasses both architecture and production.
Boat Trips from Niderviller
Small boats can be hired from Niderviller for half-day or full-day trips without a boating licence. Kuhnle Tours offers boats from Niderviller for four or six people. Duration and capacity help with two separate planning decisions: How much time would you like to allow, and what boat size might suit your group? Trips can head west to the Grande Ecluse de Réchicourt-le-Château or east to the Plan Incliné. Which direction is possible on a particular trip may depend on the operator’s arrangements. So, check the route, availability and conditions before booking.
When looking for a hotel in Niderviller, you can use your planned activities as a starting point. A half-day or full-day boat trip sets a specific time frame; the history of the manufactory and the church offers a different focus. Consider how much time you would like to spend on the water before finalising your stay.
