There are two main themes to explore during a stay in Gorze: the history of the abbey and religious buildings, or the countryside and its signposted hiking trails. The abbey was founded in 749; at the same time, Gorze is part of the Natura 2000 site “Vallons de Gorze et grotte de Robert Fey” on the limestone Côtes de Moselle. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether cultural history or trails and countryside will play a greater role in your stay.

Abbey and museum: the history of Gorze

Chrodegang, Bishop of Metz, founded the Abbey of Gorze in 749. It became an important centre of liturgical chant, later known as Gregorian chant. In addition to its founding story, the abbey therefore offers a specific insight into the history of religious music. If you are interested in the development of the town, you can use these two strands—its early monastic foundation and musical significance—as a guide to its cultural attractions.

The Musée de l’Histoire de la Terre de Gorze tells the story of the village from prehistoric times to the present day. This broad historical overview is complemented by specific themes: the Musée de la Terre de Gorze features two video presentations about the Gallo-Roman aqueduct and the history of the Benedictine Abbey of Gorze. Visitors can also view reproductions of 14th-century manuscripts about the legend of Saint Clement. The museum brings together a long sweep of history and individual cultural reference points. As exhibitions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Church, chapel and palace

The Church of Saint-Étienne is considered the oldest Gothic building in Lorraine. The Chapelle Saint-Clément was built between 1596 and 1603; a cross known as the Croix aux Loups was erected there in 1607. Construction of the Palais abbatial de Gorze began in 1696. Visible details include, among other things, two staircases with bas-reliefs. In a bas-relief, the forms depicted project only slightly from the background. The buildings therefore offer different points of interest: the church for its Gothic classification, the chapel for its precise construction timeline, and the palace for its staircases and reliefs.

The “Les champs de bataille de 1870” route also includes monuments commemorating the fighters. This adds a memorial aspect to the history of the buildings and the abbey, which you can take into account when choosing cultural themes.

Natura 2000 and hiking trails

The Natura 2000 site “Vallons de Gorze et grotte de Robert Fey”, which includes Gorze, lies on the limestone Côtes de Moselle. It consists mainly of forests and hay meadows and includes a natural underground limestone cave. The site’s landscape combines woodland and open meadows with a geological feature. Its natural attractions are clearly distinct from the history of the abbey: the focus here is on habitats and landscape.

There are more than 100 kilometres of signposted hiking trails around Gorze. The “La terre de Gorze” trail network is marked with yellow rectangles and allows hikers to put together their own route from interconnected paths. When planning, you can therefore consider both the wider network and the option of creating your own tour. If conditions change, check the trail markings on site.

These themes offer different perspectives on a stay: the abbey, museum, church and palace reveal various aspects of history, while the Natura 2000 site and hiking trails turn your attention to the landscape and nature.
