Saint-Gence brings together Gallic history and several discovery routes of varying lengths. An archaeological museum and the fortified site of Camp de César offer historical points of interest; a short educational trail or a longer walk provides different ways to plan your time. When planning your stay, first decide whether history, scenery or a longer tour should take centre stage.

Gallic finds in the present-day village centre

Archaeological excavations show that a Gallic settlement stood on the site of today’s village centre as early as the end of the third century or the beginning of the second century BC. The many amphorae found there are considered evidence of active trade. This explains why the area’s history goes back well before its medieval buildings.

The Musée Archéologique de Saint-Gence displays some of the discoveries made during ten years of excavations in the village. The municipality inaugurated it on 29 November 2019. Its listed address is 4 rue Frédéric Mistral. Check current opening hours before your visit; the inauguration date alone does not indicate today’s opening schedule.

Camp de César and the longer historical route

West of the Gallic settlement, on the headland of Motte-Chalard, lies the protohistoric fortified site of Camp de César. It was added to the supplementary list of historic monuments on 6 February 1980. Here, the name is the designation of the site and does not prove that Caesar personally visited.

The “Sur les pas des Lémovices” walking route is listed as 8.5 kilometres long. Its description passes by Camp de César and also mentions Pont Rabaud, the heath on Senon’s communal land and the Glane. Choose this route as your main walking activity rather than treating it as the same as the much shorter educational trail.

A short discovery or a longer tour

“Le Vallon des Fonts Neuves” is listed as one kilometre and 45 minutes. The published duration is a guide for planning a short discovery outing of your own, not a time estimate for every route in the municipality. Add travel time and breaks according to your actual day’s plans.

The municipal list also includes the 12-kilometre TERRA-AVENTURA route “Tous en Celtes!”, described as the Ziclou circuit, as well as a 25-kilometre mountain biking and walking route. These different routes should not be combined into a single itinerary. Check the current route and suitable mode of travel for the tour you choose.

Plan for Saint-Gentien and your overnight stay

The parish church of Saint-Gentien complements the archaeological theme with historic architecture: a rib-vaulted ceiling and a Limousin portal are noted; it has been listed as a historic monument since 1966. Whether you can visit the interior depends on its actual opening hours.

Choose your accommodation based on the exact address and your chosen starting point. A museum visit and a day of walking require different amounts of time. Plan these first, then compare suitable places to stay without assuming that being in the same locality means a short walk or an included guided tour.
