Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat can be explored through a wide range of themes: papermaking, railway history, Romanesque architecture and trails along the Vienne. When planning your stay, you can choose from cultural sites with distinct focuses and several walking routes. The right mix for you depends on whether you prefer to explore historic architecture, learn about crafts and technology, or spend time outdoors.

Papermaking, railways and Romanesque architecture

The Moulin du Got is a 15th-century paper mill that is back in operation. On a guided tour, you can make paper yourself. Operating details may vary seasonally, so check the current tour options before your visit. HistoRail offers a different focus: the railway museum is housed in a former shoe factory and covers 1,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor space. Its collection of railway objects showcases the many occupations involved in the rail industry.

At the Collégiale de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, you can encounter Romanesque architecture dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Distinctive features include a bell tower porch, a baptistery rotunda and a Limousin portal. Inside, an ambulatory and seven radially arranged chapels complete the layout. An ambulatory runs behind the choir; the chapels are grouped around this area. On the Vézelay route, the Collégiale is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France”. It preserves the tomb, the devotional lock and the reliquaries of Saint Leonard.

The municipal Musée municipal Gay-Lussac also holds a special cultural distinction: on 14 September 2012, it received the “Maison des Illustres” label from the French Ministry of Culture. If you would like to add a water-based activity to your stay, Espace Aqua'Noblat has pools open to the public of all ages, including toddlers. A hoist is available for people with reduced mobility.

Walking routes with different focuses

The “Tour de ville” is an easy cultural walking route: over 1.6 kilometres, it visits ten sights and starts in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat. The Circuit de Noblat is another way to explore the town on foot. This family-friendly walk passes the 13th-century Noblat district, follows the Vienne and goes by mills. This gives you a choice between a short cultural circuit with ten sights and a walk featuring the historic district, the river and mills.

The Circuit du Prieuré de l’Artige offers a different landscape-focused experience: it leads to former tanneries and the confluence of the Maulde and the Vienne. The destinations described here therefore differ from the sights on the Tour de ville and the stops on the Circuit de Noblat. If you would like to combine a walking route with train travel, the short “Autour de la gare de Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat” trail starts at the station; arriving by train is intended. Check the timetable separately for your travel dates.
