Water as a common thread

In Valliguières, water heritage, the fortified village and the protected wetland stand out as distinct themes. For outdoor activity, there is a municipal walking route: it is 8.5 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours and has an elevation gain of 80 metres. The duration is an estimate; together with the distance and elevation gain, it gives a concrete indication for planning the day. This makes it possible to treat the walk as a standalone activity, without confusing its figures with visiting times for other sights.

The history of the water supply can also be traced through several details. The former water intake at the Grand Font is still visible on site. From the Grand Font, the Canal des Jardins carries water through an open channel to the gardens of Valliguières. The village water supply network dates back to the 12th century. The Fontaine offers another point of reference: it was built in 1821 to supply residents with water and to water horses. The spring, open channel, gardens and fountain thus illustrate different aspects of the water heritage, without assuming an additional route connecting these places.

Fortified village and church art

The fortified site of Valliguières dates back to the Middle Ages. The present-day tower was restored in the 17th century; the fortified village has been completely renovated, and its lanes are paved. The dates help place the village setting in context: the medieval site and the later restoration of the tower mark different periods in its history.

The present-day Church of Saint-Julien belongs to a different era: it was built between 1845 and 1849. The church interior features a programme of images depicting scenes from the New Testament. These include the Last Supper and the handing of the keys to Saint Peter. The church thus adds a later church building and its own religious imagery to the history of the fortified site. Those interested in architectural history will find a clear chronological comparison here between medieval heritage and a 19th-century church.

The Chapel of Saint-Pierre is also linked to a specific historical route: it can be reached via a Stations of the Cross dating from the 19th century and restored in 2011. For several years, the pilgrimage to the chapel on Easter Monday has once again been an important part of village life. The Stations of the Cross and the pilgrimage offer two different perspectives: one is rooted in a built route with a long history, the other in a revived annual tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage, check the date for the relevant year.

Étang and landscape

The Étang of Valliguières lies amid garrigue and vineyards. It is designated as a Natura 2000 site and is subject to environmental protection measures. The area’s ecological features include amphibians such as the great crested newt. Alongside village history and religious heritage, this offers a distinct perspective on nature: the landscape of the Étang and its protected status go hand in hand. Its protected status is a useful point of reference for travellers who also take the surroundings and their ecological features into account when choosing a destination.

The different themes have distinct time frames for planning: the walk is estimated to take about two and a half hours, while the pilgrimage takes place on Easter Monday. The history of water and architecture, meanwhile, offers historical points of interest that can be considered independently of this event date. This allows you to decide in advance whether you would like your stay to focus on outdoor activity, village history, religious heritage or the landscape of the Étang.
