Valleraugue combines the history of a Cévennes village with trails that offer different experiences: a cultural and historical walk leads through the lanes, while the Sentier des 4000 marches runs from here to the summit of Aigoual. There is also a 16-stop trail and a festival held every June in L'Espérou. When planning your trip, it may help to consider whether you mainly want to explore the village, treat the climb to Aigoual as a separate undertaking, or focus more on cultural and historical themes.
A village at the foot of Mont Aigoual
Valleraugue lies at an altitude of 350 metres in the heart of the Parc National des Cévennes and is a Cévennes village at the foot of Mont Aigoual. Visible traces of the former silk and chestnut production, as well as the reforestation of Aigoual, remain in the village. These include elevated houses and chimneys, former spinning mills, silkworm-rearing buildings and clèdes. These features give your exploration a historical dimension: alongside the mountain landscape, the history of local work and reforestation also comes into focus.
Two walks through Valleraugue
The cultural and historical walk leads through the historic lanes to notable architectural landmarks, with 15 tourist information panels along the way. Les Chemins des bronzes explores Valleraugue through 16 stops. These options offer different ways to discover the village: one walk links the lanes and architectural landmarks with the information panels, while the other divides the exploration into stops. If you are especially interested in historic architecture, the cultural and historical route offers a specific focus; the 16 stops provide another way to explore Valleraugue.
From the village to the summit of Aigoual
The Sentier des 4000 marches leads from Valleraugue to the summit of Aigoual via the former postman's route, gaining 1,220 metres in elevation. The start and finish are at the Valleraugue Tourist Office. This route is quite different from the walks in the village: here, the focus is on the path to the summit and the elevation gain. Check conditions in the mountains before setting off.
Mountain biking is also part of the range of activities at the PĂ´le nature de l'Aigoual. Its nature and activity offerings are available year-round and include a mountain bike area. So, alongside the hiking trails, you can also consider this activity when planning.
June event and local information
The Transhumance Festival takes place every year in June in L'Espérou. L'Espérou is part of Valleraugue. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific dates for the season.
The Valleraugue Tourist Office is located in the Maison de Pays at the village exit on the road to Mont Aigoual. There you can get advice on planning your stay and tourist information. You can use this information point to coordinate your plans for the trails, the historical walks or the June event.
The same Parc National des Cévennes is also home to the Observatoire du Mont Aigoual, an important site in the history of the environment, cultural heritage and science.
