In Tresques, sacred architecture and a specific walking route offer different ways to explore the area. The chapels and the Tour de Guet reflect different historical periods; the circular route to the Chapelle Saint-Martin de Jussan passes through vineyards and along the Tave River. Winegrowing is another feature, with the AOC Laudun and CĂ´tes-du-RhĂ´ne appellations. You can choose the focus of your stay: architecture, walking through the landscape or regional wine.

A circular route through vineyards and along the river

The circular hiking route to the Chapelle Saint-Martin de Jussan is 5 km long and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. It passes through the vineyards of the CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne Villages Laudun appellation and follows the Tave River to the chapel. The Tave is the main river that runs through Tresques; on this route, the watercourse becomes part of the trail. The combination of vineyards, river and chapel gives the route a clear theme: landscape and culture come together on the same walk. The distance and approximate duration provide a clear framework for fitting the hike into your stay. Check local conditions before setting out.

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre-de-Castres

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre-de-Castres offers a different historical perspective. The Romanesque chapel dates from the 12th century and stands alone on a rocky outcrop opposite the Gallo-Roman oppidum of Camp de César, which also has a chapel. Its strategic location allowed the ancient route between Nîmes and Alba-la-Romaine to be monitored. One distinctive feature of the building is its roof of limestone slabs, a very rare construction in the Gard.

Chapels, a tower and architectural history

The former parish church of Saint-Martin-de-Jussan is now a chapel. Historically, it has always been a place of pilgrimage.

The Tour de Guet is a medieval lord’s tower and the only surviving remnant of the castrum mentioned in 1199. It also hosts numerous events and exhibitions. If a particular date is important for your stay, check the relevant program.

Notre-Dame de Tresques originated as the former castle chapel. In the 14th century, the church was expanded and given a bell tower in the form of a square tower.

From 1870 to 1892, the parish church was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style; the eastern section was preserved.

Wine as another way to discover Tresques

Vignobles Larguier, a family-run winery producing wines under the AOC Laudun and CĂ´tes-du-RhĂ´ne appellations, is part of the local wine scene. For travelers interested in the origins of regional products, these two appellations offer a specific point of connection. Winegrowing adds another dimension to the historical and landscape focus.

Plan your stay around your interests

For an active outing, you can plan the circular hike, which is 5 km long and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. If you’re focusing on architectural history, you can explore the Romanesque chapel, the medieval tower and the different phases of church construction as separate topics. Vignobles Larguier adds a wine-related dimension to these two options if regional production is among your travel interests.
