Sommières offers several ways to explore its history: the Château de Sommières, the Pont romain and insights into craftsmanship and rural heritage. There is also a route exploring the history of the former railway. When choosing a destination, you might consider whether you are most interested in architectural history, traditions or a themed route.

Castle and Bridge: Layers of History

The Château de Sommières dates back to the 11th century. Construction of the keep, the Tour Bermond, began in the late 12th century. The tower is 22 metres high and offers panoramic views and an orientation table. Following restoration work in 2014 and 2015, the château was opened to the public for several months of the year. Seasonal opening periods vary, so it is advisable to check the latest visitor information in advance.

The Pont romain de Sommières was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD and has been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. It is one of Europe’s rare inhabited bridges. The bridge is said to have at least 21 arches, seven of which are visible over the Vidourle. Anyone interested in its history will find both its Roman origins and a record of use dating back to the Middle Ages.

Heritage Between Town and Countryside

Sommières’ rural and popular heritage includes fountains, dry-stone structures, dovecotes, masets, lime or bread ovens, and ice houses. Its character differs from the history of the castle and bridge: alongside these well-known landmarks are traces of traditional building methods and uses. Part of Sommières is designated as a protected historic district. A continuous policy of heritage preservation and restoration is in place.

For a more guided experience, the Office de Tourisme du Pays de Sommières offers guided tours focused on the medieval town, its history and its traditions. Dates and booking arrangements may vary, so check them in advance. The Itinéraire des Savoir-Faire, by contrast, focuses on craftsmanship: the route takes you through three workshops where demonstrators present their trades and techniques. Visits are available on request and subject to availability.

A Route Exploring the Former Railway

De Voies en Voix connects Sommières with its past in a different way. The 12-kilometre route starts in Sommières or Calvisson and follows the Voie verte de la Vaunage, with eight stops along the way. It explores part of the history of the former railway. This gives it a different focus from visits in town: the route highlights railway history, while the town visits focus on the medieval town or craftsmanship in the workshops.

For planning your trip, this offers a clear choice based on your interests: the castle and bridge provide starting points for exploring architectural and urban history; guided tours bring together history and traditions; and the workshops present trades and techniques. De Voies en Voix adds the history of the former railway to these themes. You can take into account which of these perspectives you would like to shape your stay in Sommières when choosing your accommodation.
