The Avène flows through Saint-Hilaire-De-Brethmas from north to south; its confluence with the Gardon d’Alès is also within the municipality. There are also themed trails, historic buildings and recurring events. This lets you choose your destination based on specific interests: the river and routes, architectural history or an event on the calendar.
River, trails and routes of varying lengths
There are several themed options for planning a walk. The Grand sentier des sites patrimoniaux is 18.6 kilometres long. The Sentier Botanique des Herbes simples has two routes, one of which is easily accessible. Along the botanical trail, common plants once used for food, medicine and crafts are introduced. This trail therefore combines knowledge of plants with a look at their former everyday uses.
Another way to access the trail network starts at the Temple car park: from there, the route leads to the GR 700 de Régordane. This route connects Le Puy-en-Velay and the Camargue over a distance of 240 kilometres. These details illustrate different route scales: the 18.6-kilometre Grand sentier and the long-distance GR 700. If you want to plan your trip around a trail, you can choose between a shorter themed route and one with endpoints far apart.
Architectural history and historic landmarks
The Église de Saint Hilaire de Brethmas was built in the 12th century and has been listed as a Monument historique since 28 June 1963. The name Le Château should not be taken to mean a medieval fortress: it is a manor house built around 1880. The two buildings therefore represent different periods and architectural forms.
The Chapelle Sainte Thérèse in La Jasse de Bernard also adds to the picture of the area’s architectural heritage. It was built in 1934 and dedicated to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Another testament to the history of craftsmanship is the Four à chaux de Tribies: an old artisan lime kiln of the intermittent, long-flame type. The church, manor house, chapel and lime kiln offer different points of interest if you want to discover the town through its architectural and craft history.
Events throughout the year
The Duos nocturnes have been held in April since 2015. This is a pairs race at dusk; the 14-kilometre out-and-back route runs between Saint-Hilaire and Vézénobres. The Critérium des Cévennes historiques has a different sporting focus: this car rally has been organised every May since 2015 by Cévennes Alpine Gordini and the municipality, in the territory of Saint-Hilaire. The two events differ both in discipline and in the month they are held.
The Fête votive takes place every year and celebrates Provençal bullfighting culture. In November, the Salon des arts is held annually at the Gymnase and Salle Louis Benoit. The exhibition features painting, sculpture and literature. Alongside running and motorsport events, the calendar therefore offers recurring cultural events at other times of the year.
La Saint-Hilairoise is an annual cycling, mountain biking and hiking event. More than 1,000 people took part in the edition held on 30 March 2025. This figure applies specifically to that date and provides a historical reference point for the event.
If you are planning your trip around an event, use the relevant month as a guide and check the specific date in advance.
