Saint-Félix-De-Pallières combines a layered historical connection to the area with opportunities for walks and hikes. The village is located on the site of the former Roman villa “Villa San Felicia”. Religious architecture, prehistoric monuments and the Pallières mines add to this setting. This gives you different areas of focus when planning your trip: architectural history and archaeological remains alongside activities in the surrounding countryside.

Roman connections and mining history

The former Roman villa “Villa San Felicia” provides an early historical connection: Saint-Félix-De-Pallières is located on its site. Another chapter is represented by the Pallières mining complex, which is located in Saint-Félix-De-Pallières and is associated with pyrite, zinc and lead. The last mine site closed in 1971. The historic villa site and the industrial past thus represent different facets of the area’s history. The village also has several magnaneries, traditional buildings associated with silkworm farming. They broaden the picture of the village’s built history to include a traditional rural activity.

Churches, architecture and planning your visit

The Église Saint-Félix is listed as a historic monument; it was granted protected status by a decree dated 11 April 1967. In summer, the church provides a setting for concerts and exhibitions. The Protestant temple at the edge of the village was restored in 1981 and features typical 19th-century architecture with a columned entrance porch; it is currently not open to visitors. The château is now privately owned and cannot be visited.

The summer events offer a practical guide when choosing when to travel. If you would like to include a concert or exhibition in your stay, check the dates for your preferred travel period; they may vary. When planning cultural visits, it is also worth distinguishing between the seasonal use of the Église Saint-Félix and the visiting arrangements for the temple and château.

Dolmen and prehistoric remains

The Dolmen de la Bergerie de Panissière has been restored within its cairn. A circle of 15 upright stones defines the edge of the cairn. Around Grande Pallières, there are about twenty dolmens. The prehistoric theme therefore ranges from the architectural details of a single monument to a larger group around Grande Pallières. If you are particularly interested in prehistoric remains, there are two different perspectives here: the design of a specific dolmen and the larger group of monuments in the Grande Pallières area.

The historical timeline extends from the prehistoric dolmens and the site of the former Roman villa to 19th-century architecture and the last mining site, which closed in 1971. These historical themes can be considered in terms of their different periods and forms, rather than being reduced to a single story of the area.

Landscape and outdoor activities

The municipality covers 1,887 hectares of rural, mid-mountain and forest land. Wooded areas account for about 95 percent of Saint-Félix-De-Pallières, making the forest a defining feature of the landscape. The village and its surroundings offer many opportunities for walks and hikes on foot or on horseback. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to make these activities a focus in their own right or fit them in alongside the cultural attractions. This allows you to shape your stay around architecture and local history, time in the countryside, or a combination of both.
