Saint-André-De-Majencoules is a village on a rocky promontory: its houses cluster around the castle and church. There is also the silk mill, a testament to the industrial side of raw silk production, paths through chestnut and holm oak forests, and activities ranging from garden art to stained glass. This gives you more than one main focus when planning your trip: you can shape your stay around the village layout and walking trails, or focus specifically on gardens, crafts and agriculture.

Village history between rock and silk

The Les Rouquis circular trail passes through the hilltop village, with its lanes, church, castle and silk mill. The trail itself also has a distinctive character: it runs through chestnut and holm oak forests and along paths with steps carved from granite. Woodland sections and stone-paved stretches are as much a part of this route as the village scenery.

The silk mill adds industrial history to the buildings mentioned above. It remains a testament to the industrial side of raw silk production. Anyone interested in the village’s different historical features will find a connection to silk making here, alongside the church and castle. The circular trail thus offers a way to experience several facets of the village, without every destination needing to have the same character.

Trails and timeframes

The Sentier de Camias follows an old, well-preserved path paved with stone slabs through the historic hamlets of Camias and L’Arboux. From Pont d’Hérault, the trail is marked in yellow; it is listed as 8.9 kilometres, around three hours and 467 metres of elevation gain. When planning, it is worth considering the approximate duration together with the distance and elevation gain. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

The Sur la Route de l’Oignon Doux des Cévennes circular route takes two to three hours and passes through landscapes associated with the cultivation of AOC Oignon Doux des Cévennes. The timeframes for this circuit and the roughly three-hour Sentier de Camias are similar; distance and elevation gain are also provided for Camias. The routes differ more in what they offer: one passes through historic hamlets along a stone-paved path, while the other takes in landscapes associated with the cultivation of Cévennes sweet onions.

Gardens, glass and agriculture

Le Jardin des Sambucs brings ecology and art together. Among stone trees, shady benches, water features and unusual structures, the garden invites you to wander. Rather than a trail route or historic village setting, the focus here is on designed garden features and the interplay between nature and art.

At the Verre et Vitrail – Gontel&Dupin workshop, private individuals can take introductory stained-glass classes. These can last from a few hours to two days. This is a different timeframe from a walk or a several-hour circuit, and it may therefore take up a larger part of your stay.

La Ferme de Valbonne combines tastings of chestnut products with information about chestnut cultivation using organic and biodynamic methods. Tastings are free; learning about cultivation also offers an insight into agricultural practices. Domaine de Castel Riquet is a family-run business spanning several generations, with traditional terrace cultivation, sales and tastings on site. If you plan a visit, check seasonal access before you travel.
