The underground chamber of the Grotte des Camisards is approximately 30 metres wide, 35 metres long and 13 metres deep. Its width and length are similar, while it is less deep. Rochegude also offers a medieval fortified village centre, the garrigue, a walk to a named dolmen, and activities on the Cèze. You can combine nature and local history with a range of outdoor activities: the focus depends on whether you prefer to explore a cave and its past, the village landscape, a walking route or activities on the river.
Village centre and garrigue
The medieval fortified village centre sits on a steep hill, overlooked by a castle. It is described as a stone labyrinth that visitors can explore. Exploring the hilltop centre is therefore different from visiting the cave: the fortifications, steep setting and castle shape the village landscape, while the underground space and its historical context take centre stage in the cave. The garrigue can also be explored, where you can see capitelles and visit dolmens. If you are particularly interested in the layout of the medieval village, make the village centre your focus. If you would like to discover individual landmarks in the landscape, turn your attention to the garrigue.
Grotte des Camisards: nature and history
The Grotte des Camisards is located in the Chante-Merle locality, in the hills above the village of Rochegude, and can be reached via a marked path. As the cave is considered fragile, check local access information before your visit. During the Camisard War of 1702 to 1704, Jean Cavalier and his group stayed in the cave in January and February 1703. It was later named after the rebels. Here, a natural cavity and a clearly dated period in local history are linked in the same place.
Walk to the Dolmen du Tonnerre
The “Architecture à ciel ouvert” walking route leads to the Dolmen du Tonnerre. It has local yellow markings and information signs. The interpretation trail panels are in French and English; the markings and information panels serve different purposes: one guides you along the route, while the other provides information. After weather events, check the markings on site. This walk is an option for visitors who want to head to a specific named destination, while the cave offers a different focus, combining a cavern with its historical context.
Activities on the Cèze
Swimming and canoeing are both possible on the Cèze in Rochegude. Please check local safety information before swimming. Gold panning is possible at Pont Noyé; check local information before trying it. Both river activities are therefore associated with the same named location, while gold panning is specifically linked to Pont Noyé. This distinction can help you choose based on the activity and location.
