Robiac lies on the River Cèze. The former coal transport route, prehistoric sites and two circular hiking routes offer different options for planning a stay. The routes vary in length, elevation gain and stated duration; their thematic focus also differs.
Mining History and Prehistoric Sites
The former Rochessadoule–Bessèges mining railway transported coal from the mines at Robiac, Grangier and Brissac to the factories in Bessèges. Its former role as a transport route is part of the town’s mining history. The “La mine au bois dormant” hike follows much of this former railway line, connecting with the history of the route.
The named sites offer a glimpse into a different period. The Grotte des Chiens in Robiac is described as a prehistoric site dating to the period between 11,000 and 10,000 BC. The Grotte des Crânes in Robiac is among the sites dating from 6,000 to 3,000 BC.
The remains of the Benedictine priory of Saint-Laurent, dating from the 10th to the 12th century, are located in Robiac-Rochessadoule. The town’s mining heritage also includes a workshop for making miners’ lamps. Craft knowledge of dry-stone restoration has also been preserved there. These traces broaden the picture, from former coal mining to monastic heritage and traditional craft techniques.
Two Circular Hikes with Different Profiles
“La mine au bois dormant” is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 8.6 kilometres. It starts at Robiac, Le Buis. In addition to the former railway line, the route passes through the medieval hamlet of Le Vieux-Buis, which has been known since the 11th century. The hamlet features typical Cévenol architecture. This route brings together mining history and a historic settlement.
The “La chapelle Lachamp” circular hike is 10.93 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 560 metres and a stated duration of 4 hours and 45 minutes. It climbs to the chapel, which offers panoramic views. The route starts and finishes at the church car park in Robiac.
In direct comparison, the loop to Chapelle Lachamp is 2.33 kilometres longer; its elevation gain and duration are also specified. For “La mine au bois dormant,” the moderate difficulty, circular route and path along the former railway line are key features. So the choice is about more than distance: one hike focuses on mining heritage and Le Vieux-Buis, while the other features the climb to the chapel and its panoramic views.
A Market as Another Part of Your Trip
You can also include a culinary focus: the La Noria agroecological farm hosts a weekly market as well as producers’ markets on the farm. If you want to plan your stay around a specific market day, check the dates in advance. This lets you include a market as a separate part of your trip alongside hiking and local history, without tying it to either of the two circular routes.
