In Remoulins, local history and trails along the Gardon go hand in hand: former buildings tell stories of changing uses, while hiking trails wind through the garrigue and along the riverbanks. If you are looking for accommodation in Remoulins, you can plan your stay around your own interests—with historic traces in the town, a hike or a seasonal visit to the water. The details below provide guidance on the different topics and dates.

Heritage and architectural history

The organ in Remoulins is considered one of the few surviving examples of Moitessier organ building. Only its instrumental part is specifically protected as an object. Notre-Dame de Bethléem also combines a distinctive architectural form with a varied history: the former church dates from the 12th century and has a comb-style bell tower. In the 19th century, it successively served as the town hall, a justice of the peace court, a prison and a school. This sequence makes the building an interesting subject for anyone interested not only in religious architecture but also in its former uses.

The keep of Remoulins is the only surviving evidence of the former castle of the lords of Uzès. The tower is considered typical of the 12th century and features rusticated masonry. The Tour des Escaravats dates from the same period; “Escaravats” means “beetles” in Provençal. The former fortified Porte de Remoulins is six metres high. Together, these buildings offer different ways to explore the town’s history, though they did not all serve the same purpose or have the same significance.

The old suspension bridge can also be placed in a historical context: it was one of France’s first suspension bridges and was built by brothers Marc and Camille Seguin. It was completed in May 1830 and dismantled in 1937. Its remains are listed as historic monuments. From the bridge site, both banks offer a panoramic view of the Gardon—a different perspective on the river from the one along the riverbank trails.

Hiking trails, the Gardon and a swimming spot

The “Entre Gardon et Vigières” trail connects the old town of Remoulins with the banks of the Gardon. It passes through lanes, gardens and shady paths, and is marked with yellow signs and waymarkers. If conditions change, check the markings on site. The route thus offers a described connection between the old town and the riverbank.

The “Autour du Pont du Gard” circular hike has different specifications: it is 8.7 kilometres long, climbs 234 metres and is listed as taking three hours. It starts at the Place de la Madone car park in Remoulins. The route leads to remains of the Roman aqueduct and a panoramic view of the Pont du Gard. These details provide a concrete basis for choosing between the two: “Entre Gardon et Vigières” focuses on the old town, the riverbank and a route through lanes and gardens, while “Autour du Pont du Gard” has a specified distance, elevation gain and duration, as well as the destinations mentioned above.

Another option by the water is the Baignade Ă  Remoulins swimming spot. It is near the town centre and offers a view of the Pont Neuf. Tourist information updated on 8 July 2024 gives the seasonal opening period as 1 April to 30 September, with free admission. Check the conditions before visiting. This makes the swimming spot a distinct seasonal option alongside the hikes.

Summer markets and the FĂŞte votive

The 2025 municipal welcome booklet describes summer food-truck evenings from mid-June to the end of August, held on Tuesday evenings in the square in front of the town hall. It lists Monday evenings from mid-July to mid-August for night markets, where local producers and creative craftspeople come together. Dates and formats may change from year to year. The two events differ in their weekday and focus: food trucks on Tuesdays, and producers and crafts at the Monday night markets.

The Fête votive includes a fair, a communal meal with local restaurateurs, and an encierro, bandido and abrivado in the town’s streets. The festival is described as taking place on the third weekend of July; the dates and programme details may vary each year. The Fête votive is therefore a concentrated festival weekend, while the food-truck evenings and night markets are described as recurring weekly events during the summer. If these events coincide with your travel dates, check the specific dates before making plans.
