The medieval bridge, sacred art and a designated cycling route give Pont-Saint-Esprit its distinctive character. Its cultural heritage ranges from a bridge with a history of regional connections to buildings that served very different purposes in the past. There is also a cycling route whose length, duration and views of the landscape offer a concrete alternative to exploring the town centre.

Bridge and cycling route: two ways to experience the town

The Pont du Saint-Esprit was built between 1265 and 1309 by the Œuvre du Saint-Esprit brotherhood and connected Languedoc with Provence. At 919 metres long and originally featuring 26 arches, it is a striking landmark in the town’s history. From the medieval bridge, Pont-Saint-Esprit connects directly to the Via Rhôna. The bridge is therefore not only part of the town’s history, but also a landmark on the cycling network.

The Boucle cyclodécouverte Spiripontaine offers a dedicated way to discover the town and its surroundings by bicycle. The loop is 18 kilometres long, takes two hours and has a gently undulating route; it is suitable for families. Along the way, it offers views of the Rhône valley and Mont Ventoux. Those who want to explore the town centre have another option: the Circuit touristique de Pont-Saint-Esprit, whose guide map enables visitors to explore the centre. The cycling route and the walking tour thus differ not only in how you get around, but also in the experience they offer. As route details and conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest guide map or the current condition of the cycling route in advance.

Sacred art and buildings from different centuries

The Collégiale, also known as the Chapelle du Saint-Esprit, was built between 1310 and 1326. The Œuvre du Saint-Esprit brotherhood established it, with the approval of Philippe le Bel, to care for the sick, the poor and abandoned children. Its south portal is an example of Flamboyant Gothic, a late Gothic style, and was listed as a historic monument in 1910. The building period, original purpose and portal style each tell a different facet of the building’s history.

The Musée d’Art Sacré du Gard is housed in the Maison des Chevaliers, a medieval residence whose origins date back to the 12th century. The building has been fully protected as a historic monument since 1992. Since 17 September 2003, the museum has held the designation “Musée de France”. The Musée laïque d’Art Sacré du Gard offers an original cultural approach to sacred art. Those interested in the collection and its cultural perspective can thus explore the subject from a different angle than by looking at the Collégiale’s architecture.

The Maison du Roi also combines architectural history with a distinctive former function: it was the seat of the Œuvre du Pont’s rectors and hosted twelve kings of France. It has been listed as a historic monument since 4 February 1946. At the Ancienne citadelle, meanwhile, the remains of 14th- and 15th-century hospital buildings stand alongside fortifications probably built by Vauban. The portal of the former hospital chapel and the north façade of the Ancienne citadelle were listed as historic monuments by decree on 19 November 1910. This designation applies to the named parts of the buildings and is separate from the listing of the Collégiale’s south portal.
