Générargues combines a landscape of three valleys with a botanical garden and a rich local history. The municipality stretches across the Amous, Dodé and Gardon valleys, which are separated by high hills. Générargues is also a municipality in the Parc national des Cévennes. The landscape, garden and historical landmarks therefore offer different focal points when planning a stay.

Bambouseraie and garden visits

Founded in 1856 by Eugène Mazel, the Bambouseraie en Cévennes is an exotic garden with plant species from all five continents and more than 1,000 varieties. The continents indicate the geographical range of the plant species; the number of varieties gives a different impression, namely the diversity within the garden. The Bambouseraie de Prafrance is listed as a historic monument and has been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” label. Botanical diversity and cultural heritage are therefore two distinct yet equally defining themes here. Check seasonal visiting options before your trip.

Since 2023, the Bambouseraie en Cévennes has offered the family treasure hunt la quête de la fleur d'Aleya. This activity involves exploring the garden through observation and deduction. Alongside learning about plants, it offers a different focus: looking closely, connecting clues and following the riddle. Before your visit, check whether the treasure hunt is available on your planned date.

The architectural features of the historic Bambouseraie de Prafrance estate are also noteworthy. They include a system of a mill, canal, channels and pumping machinery, as well as the façades and roofs of the Prafrance farm. This means the garden can be viewed not only botanically, but also in the context of historic waterworks and agricultural buildings.

Church, temple and silk history

The church of Notre Dame de Générargues is first mentioned in 1276 in the cartulary of Notre Dame du Bonheur. In December 1702, at the beginning of the Camisard War, it was burned down by Roland's troops. The early written mention and the destruction during the historical conflict mark two distinct stages in the church's history. The Protestant temple offers a different perspective on the area's religious heritage: built in 1841 from fine brickwork in the town centre, it has an octagonal bell tower. Here, the year of construction, materials and shape of the tower take centre stage, while the church's history is defined by its mention and destruction.

Silk production was one of Générargues' economic assets. Cocoon production began in the early 17th century and peaked in the mid-19th century. The abundance of water encouraged the establishment of several silk mills. The Château de la Rode, between the hamlets of La Rode and Le Viala, is a built example of this local history: the large bourgeois house dates from the late 17th century; adjoining it are a former silkworm farm from 1812 and a farmhouse. The dates trace the story from early cocoon production through later construction to the peak of the silk industry.

The weekly farmers' market, held every Friday morning, is also part of everyday life in Générargues. Check the date locally before your trip.
