In Gagnieres, mining history is a clear focus of several things to see and do: it features at the Musée de la Mine de Gagnières and on information boards along the Voie verte. There is also a walking route that takes time to complete, the scenery along the Ganière, and stage performances. Historical themes, a walk and cultural events sit side by side.

Mining history at the museum

At the Musée de la Mine de Gagnières, you can explore on your own or take a guided tour; audio guides are also available. The museum includes the Salle des pendus exhibition area. A replica mine gallery, equipped with items from the period, offers another perspective on mining history as part of the tour.

The town’s history also has specific dates: Gagnieres had around nine mine shafts from 1832 to 1929. This approximate number and the long time span put the subject in context, which you can explore from different perspectives at the museum and on the outdoor information boards.

Walking route, Voie verte and treasure hunt

Allow about two hours for the walk along the Parcours de Gagnières if you want to read all the information boards. An online version of the route is available via QR codes on the boards. The time estimate therefore includes not only walking but also reading the information.

The section of the Voie verte L’Échappée, opened in 2022, connects Gagnieres with Saint-Paul-le-Jeune and is just over two kilometers long. Several boards along the Voie verte describe the mining history of Gagnieres and the history of its former railway line.

At the entrance to the Voie verte L’Échappée on the Gagnieres side, you’ll find the L’Échappée Belle treasure hunt, which is open to everyone. A game booklet and pencils are provided there. This activity adds a hands-on element to the information on the boards; the materials are available at the entrance.

Scenery and stage performances

The Ganière is a gold-bearing river that separates very different landscapes in four large loops. This offers a different way to experience Gagnieres from its historic sites: here, the focus is on the scenery rather than the mining exhibition or information boards.

For a cultural evening, Le Petit Théâtre de la Berthe is another option. Stage performances take place there three times a month. Participants include actors, musicians, singers, artists and theater enthusiasts. The program may change, so check the current dates for your travel period.

Planning information

When planning, distinguish between duration and distance: about two hours is the time for the walk along the Parcours, including reading all the boards; just over two kilometers is the length of the Voie verte section between Gagnieres and Saint-Paul-le-Jeune. One figure describes how long an activity takes, while the other gives the length of a connecting route. If you’d also like to attend a performance, check the current theater dates.
