Caveirac offers a range of highlights for a trip, from château architecture and monuments to hikes with visits to capitelles and the Voie Verte. The château includes a 35-hectare park and a U-shaped layout; the Romanesque Église Saint-Adrien and the Borne milliaire au nom d’Auguste add to the cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Caveirac, you can first decide whether architectural history, hiking or both will be the focus.

Château de Caveirac: park and architectural design

The park of Château de Caveirac covers 35 hectares; its design is dated to 1699. The size gives a sense of its scale, while the year places its design in a historical context. The château has a U-shaped layout. A main building and two side wings arranged at right angles create this shape. If you enjoy looking at buildings in terms of their structure, you can follow the basic shape and the arrangement of the wings here; this brings the architecture itself into view alongside the park.

Église Saint-Adrien and the milestone: different periods

The Borne milliaire au nom d’Auguste is located on Place du Château in Caveirac. Its main construction phase dates to antiquity; it was classified as a historic monument by decree of 20 December 1911. The two dates serve different purposes: antiquity refers to the main construction phase, while 1911 gives the date of its classification.

Église Saint-Adrien can also be placed in a historical context. It is Romanesque and appears in written records from 1156; it was restored in the 17th century. The portal has a separate date: it was listed as a historic monument by decree of 12 October 1972. The dates therefore relate to different aspects of the church: its first written mention, its restoration and the protected status of the portal.

Hiking: navigation, scenery and dry-stone construction

The footpath leading up to the site of Colline Saint-Roch begins 100 metres before the Font d’Arques spring. The spring is therefore the landmark for the start of the path. Caveirac also has numerous hikes featuring visits to capitelles and the Voie Verte. These hiking suggestions offer a wider choice of themes than the specific path to Colline Saint-Roch. Check route availability before your trip.

The Voie Verte de la Vaunage runs through the open Vaunage plain, which is bordered by limestone hills. If you want to focus on the scenery during a hike, you will find a clear combination here: the open plain and the hills surrounding it.

The Pierre sèche et garrigue Caveirac association creates paths as part of the restoration and/or construction of dry-stone structures. These are open to the public during and after the work; check local access conditions. At restoration sites, the association also offers training for people who wish to learn dry-stone construction. If you would like to take part, ask locally about the participation requirements.
