In 1209, Count Raymond VI of Toulouse signed a treaty in the church of Caissargues. You can also explore the town through its green spaces, a museum dedicated to the Copper Age and the Tram’bus connection to Nîmes. Caissargues lies in the Vistre plain, in the canton of Vistrenque and in the Costières area. When planning your visit, local history, time outdoors and the connection to the city offer distinct points of focus.
History in key dates
The church of Caissargues dates from the 11th century and is in the Baroque style. It was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1574 and subsequently left to decay. The 1209 treaty takes us back to an earlier period in its history; the destruction marks a later turning point. The dovecote can also be linked to specific dates: repair records from 1596, 1604 and 1612 attest to its age. The municipality bought the park and Château de Caissargues in 1954.
Museum and architectural traces
The Copper Age is the focus of the Musée La Dame de Caissargues. The permanent exhibition features a cast of the skeleton known as the “Dame de Caissargues”. An audio guide tells the story of the Lady, while games and lighting effects complement the exhibition. The museum thus combines its archaeological subject with different ways of presenting it.
Near the museum, the colonnades of the former Théâtre de Nîmes were re-erected in Caissargues. Traditionally, they were used as a backdrop for wedding photos. The historical reference to the former theatre and the later use of the colonnades for photographs give this architectural feature a different context from the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Parks, play and sport
The Parc municipal is a green space with the five-metre-high “Toile d’araignée” climbing frame and other play equipment for children. Le Bois des enfants offers a different setting: the park is intended for walks and picnics and has some children’s play equipment. A Bi-Cross course is located right next to Le Bois des enfants, on Chemin de Bellecoste.
The Complexe Philippe Lamour is also a multisport facility. Young people can play sports there freely, and the AS Caissargues Foot, Tennis and Boule d’Ivoire clubs train there. The facilities serve different purposes: play equipment is the focus at the Parc municipal, walking and picnics at Le Bois des enfants, and sport at the Complexe Philippe Lamour.
July events and a look back at 2024
The Nocturnes de Caissargues take place on Tuesdays in July, with evening concerts in the Parc municipal. The 2026 edition also featured another open-air cinema night. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for the relevant year.
The Féria de Caissargues lasted four days in 2024 and was held for the 59th time that year. The programme included bullfighting events in the arenas and on the streets. These details refer to the 2024 edition; for a specific travel period, the dates of the events taking place that year are what matter.
Getting there and finding your way
The Tram’bus T4 line connects Caissargues to Marguerittes via central Nîmes and was extended to Chemin des Canaux in Caissargues. In January 2026, the direct journey from the new park-and-ride to central Nîmes was stated to take 20 minutes. Check the timetable and journey time with the operator before travelling.
On the A54, the Aire de Caissargues is a landscaped 35-hectare rest area. Its grounds include tree-lined paths and a 700-metre lawn. Both the T4 connection and the landscaped motorway rest area are useful reference points around Caissargues.
