Cabrières combines village history with a striking landscape. In the village, the church built in 1609 and the Château du cardinal de Cabrières point to historical themes; across the commune, the landscape is shaped by garrigue, geologically ancient rocks and protected areas. You can therefore plan your trip around two specific interests: the village’s history or its landscape and habitats.

Garrigue, protected areas and geology

Cabrières lies in the garrigue on the slopes. The Natura 2000 site “Le Gardon et ses gorges,” also known as “Gorges du Gardon,” covers 759 hectares in Cabrières, equivalent to 51.4 percent of the commune’s area. This percentage indicates the share of the commune covered; a further 284 hectares of communal woodland belong to the same site. If you would like to include individual areas in your plans in more detail, check the current site boundaries; the management boundaries for the woodland area may also change.

A further, distinct landscape designation is the area “Gorges du Gardon, Pont du Gard and garrigues nîmoises,” classified as a remarkable landscape. Cabrières is part of it. The classification was established by decree in 2013; the landscape covers eleven communes and 7,760 hectares. While the first site figure refers to Cabrières, this classified landscape extends across several communes.

The rocks of Cabrières are among the oldest in Languedoc and date back between 500 and 325 million years. A new lavogne, a traditional livestock watering pond, has also been built from natural stone in the garrigue; it creates a wetland habitat for amphibians and dragonflies. The nature theme thus ranges from the geological age of the rocks to a specific habitat.

Village history and archaeological traces

The village church of Cabrières was built in 1609. The Château du cardinal de Cabrières is one of the most important testimonies to the village’s Christian history. The church therefore provides a clearly dated point of reference, while the château represents the Christian history of the village.

Fragments of vases and pottery found across Cabrières attest to the presence of Roman civilisation. These traces complement the named historic buildings with archaeological evidence distributed across the commune. The cultural context of the place thus encompasses architectural history and Christian heritage as well as Roman remains.

Road and cycling connections

The RD 3 runs through Cabrières from north to south and connects the village with the Gorges du Gardon and Uzès. The “Boucle cyclo-découverte de l’Aqueduc” cycling route also passes through Cabrières, but offers a different planning reference: the road connects the village with the destinations mentioned, while the cycling route runs through Cabrières. If you plan to use the cycling route, check the current conditions locally. This allows you to take the road connection and the cycling route into account as distinct aspects of your trip planning.
