Discover Branoux-Les-Taillades through a range of experiences: a Romanesque church, historic structures, traces of earlier cultures and trails through a mountain landscape. The village lies at the foot of the Col de la Baraque on a small plateau, surrounded by mountains with chestnut and pine trees. When planning a trip, you can consider architecture and landscape as separate highlights, without having to combine them into a single tour.
Landscape and trails
The GR 44 B crosses Branoux-Les-Taillades along the ridgelines. From the Col de la Baraque, the route overlooks the Branoux Valley in the direction of Castanet. The ridgeline route and the view into the valley shape the described trail. Check the route details locally before setting out, so your plans reflect the current conditions.
The Chemin du Mineur is also a distinct point of reference in the history of local trails. In September 2024, Alès Agglomération reported that the trail had been restored and signposted over a length of 5.5 kilometres. Pupils from Branoux and Les Taillades used it as part of the “un chemin, une école” project. This information refers to the work reported at the time; check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Church and historic structures
The Église Saint-Pierre de Blannaves is a Romanesque church dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its simple floor plan has no chancel bay. At the apse, four pilaster strips support a triple-arched frieze. Pilaster strips are narrow, vertical wall projections; an arched frieze arranges arches in a decorative band. The building is attributed to monks from the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. A decree dated 6 December 1949 listed the church as a historic monument.
The Pont Bertrand between the village of Branoux and the hamlet of La Favède shows a different type of structure. According to archival texts, the very high bridge was built shortly before 1800; it spans the Brémo with a single arch. Its parapets are made of slate or stone slabs. The church and bridge thus offer different historical and architectural highlights: a Romanesque religious building on the one hand, and a bridge dating to shortly before 1800 on the other.
Megalithic traces, water and velodrome
Megalithic traces can be found in the hills of Branoux-Les-Taillades at Caussiers, Mortissou, Castanet and Lichère. On a walk, you can discover dolmens as well as signs and rock carvings among these traces. These places provide different reference points for the local heritage; this does not imply any specific connection between them.
Above the two villages lies Lac des Camboux, with a water sports centre. The activities on offer and the conditions may vary. Les Taillades is also home to the fully renovated Vélodrome Louis-Riquet. The 250-metre-long cycling track is set in natural surroundings and is considered one of only three facilities of its kind in Occitania. Check the operating conditions separately before planning to use it.
For a meal break, Auberge du Fraissinet is a specific point of reference on the Gardon: the restaurant serves home-cooked food made with local, fresh and seasonal produce. Its seasonal focus is part of the offering and should not be taken to mean that the selection of produce remains the same all year round.
