Two distinct themes come together in Bezouce: the layered history of Saint-André church and the Boucle de l’Aqueduc, a circular cycling route connected with olive groves and oil mills. The Musée de Bezouce complements the cultural focus with objects from Roman times. This allows you to explore Bezouce according to your interest in architectural history, antiquity or cycling.

Saint-André: Building Phases and History

Saint-André church has a Romanesque foundation; its apse dates from the 11th or 12th century. In the 19th century, the church was expanded from one to three naves. The painter Joseph Beaufort created the choir decoration in 1890. The number of naves describes the later expansion, while the choir decoration marks a distinct artistic undertaking. At Saint-André, you can distinguish different questions about the building’s history: Which parts are classified as medieval, how did the church interior change, and when was the choir decorated?

A precisely dated event is also associated with the church: on December 8, 1482, Jacques II de Caulers was consecrated bishop of Nîmes at Saint-André. This historical milestone adds a biographical perspective to the history of the building and its furnishings. If you also view religious architecture through the people and events connected with it, this provides a specific point of reference.

Roman Times and the Noria

The Musée de Bezouce displays objects from Roman times. As museum content can change, check the current exhibitions before your visit if a particular subject is important to your plans.

The Noria de l’Aqueduc Romain was restored in 2004. The subject also features on the Boucle de l’Aqueduc: the cycling route includes an educational installation centered on a noria. Bezouce therefore offers both a restored noria with a specific restoration date and a noria featured in an installation along the route.

Cycling and Olive Culture

The Boucle de l’Aqueduc is a 25.5 km circular cycling route that starts in Bezouce. A hybrid bike (VTC) or mountain bike (VTT) is recommended; road bikes are not recommended. The distance indicates the length of the cycling route, while the guidance on bike types provides separate help with choosing a bike.

The route passes near olive groves and oil mills. It also includes the educational installation centered on a noria. At L’Oulivo, table olives of the Picholine variety and locally produced olive oils are available. When planning, you can therefore consider both the cycling route and the specific olive products on offer without combining the two into a single activity.

Before setting out for a day of cycling, check the current route description, as route details may change. The recommendations for hybrid bikes (VTC) or mountain bikes (VTT), and the note that road bikes are not recommended, can help you choose a bike suited to the route described.
