Architectural history can be traced through specific details in Vallières-Les-Grandes: Château de la Thomasserie is a hunting lodge with a U-shaped floor plan and a vestibule with a painted vaulted ceiling. There is also the “De l’Amasse aux rives du Cher” walking route, which leads to the washhouse and passes through a varied landscape of forests, plains and valleys. Architectural details and a named point along the route thus offer different ways to explore the area.

Château de la Thomasserie: architectural form and heritage status

Château de la Thomasserie is privately owned. It was built in the second half of the 18th century as a hunting lodge. Its U-shaped floor plan and water-filled moats are among the defining features of the estate. By decree dated 22 September 2009, several elements were listed as historic monuments: the central residential wing, including its fittings; the façades and roofs of the building sections forming the wings of the courtyard of honour; and the access bridge and masonry water-filled moats. The listing therefore covers parts of the residence as well as the design of the wings and access features.

The vestibule features a painted vaulted ceiling that is rare in the Centre region, and possibly unique. It depicts Diana’s chariot and allegories of the four seasons. The imagery combines a mythological motif with depictions of the seasons. Alongside the floor plan, moats and historic listing, the ceiling offers a particularly tangible point of reference: it draws attention to the building’s decorative design, not just its exterior form.

Another art-historical detail is an altarpiece featuring the painting “Christ on the Cross,” the tabernacle and the altar base. It dates from the 17th century and was restored in the 19th century. These two dates mark distinct phases: its creation and a later restoration. The history of the altarpiece therefore cannot be reduced to a single date.

Audio-guided walks in Sud Val de Loire

The Sud Val de Loire Tourist Office has published seven audio-guided walks for towns and villages in Sud Val de Loire online. Each walk includes an illustrated written version, a map showing points of interest and an audio version in five languages. The formats offer different ways to explore the walks: the map shows points of interest, the written version presents the content with illustrations, and the audio version is available in five languages. The offer covers towns and villages in the region and should be viewed as a regional overview.

Walking route to the washhouse

The “De l’Amasse aux rives du Cher” walking route includes a section of the “Loire à Vélo” and leads to the washhouse in Vallières-Les-Grandes. The landscape is described as featuring forests, plains and valleys. The route listing was updated on 29 June 2026. Unlike the architectural details of the château, the walking route focuses on the landscape and a specific destination. This gives you two different starting points when choosing what interests you: historic architecture or a route with a named destination and varied scenery.
