More than 600 kilometres of La Loire à Vélo lie in Centre-Val de Loire. The region also has châteaux, historic towns and villages, and a cultural landscape shaped by the Loire. You can plan a trip around a cycling route, architectural and social history, or an interest in nature and food.

The Loire as a Cultural and Trade Corridor

The UNESCO-listed Loire cultural landscape covers a 280-kilometre stretch from Sully-sur-Loire east of Orléans to Chalonnes west of Angers; Centre-Val de Loire contains part of it. Historic towns and villages, châteaux and cultivated land are part of a landscape shaped over centuries through its interaction with the Loire.

Historically, the river was an important transport and trade corridor. Harbours and levee systems remain prominent features of the river landscape. This means the Loire can be seen not only as a backdrop to château history, but also as a former transport and trading route.

Châteaux, Cities and Art

Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Blois and Azay-le-Rideau illustrate the political and social history of France and Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The UNESCO-listed cultural sites also reflect the ideals of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment in European thought and design. Visitors interested in different historical periods will find more than individual château buildings here: these places also represent changes in politics, society and architecture.

In Tours, the half-timbered houses around Place Plumereau, Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the Centre de création contemporaine Olivier Debré are among the city’s cultural landmarks. Chaumont-sur-Loire is a Centre d’Arts et de Nature: contemporary exhibitions take place in the château, the park and the stables. Around thirty gardens follow themes that change each year; exhibition content also changes.

Cycling Routes on Different Scales

La Loire à Vélo covers more than 800 kilometres in total, including more than 600 kilometres in Centre-Val de Loire. The regional section alternates between cycle paths and quiet minor roads, is considered accessible to all and is signposted in both directions. It connects riverbanks, gardens, towns, châteaux, vineyards and preserved natural areas. Signposting may be adjusted locally.

The Centre-Val de Loire cycling network covers nearly 5,000 kilometres across Touraine, Perche, Berry and the Val de Loire, including routes to château circuits. Around the Loire châteaux, 500 kilometres of purpose-built cycle paths and greenways form 17 loops. They lead to places including Blois, Chambord, Cheverny and Chaumont-sur-Loire. You can choose between an extensive cycling network and specific loops with châteaux as points of interest.

Wine and Regional Produce

Chenin, Gamay, Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pinot noir grapes grow in the Val de Loire. Chinon, Sancerre, Bourgueil and Vouvray give wine lovers specific places to explore; Crémant de Loire is produced in Touraine. Culinary highlights linked to cycling routes also include the Sancerre, Chinon, Vouvray and Saumur-Champigny appellations, Loire fish, Tarte Tatin and goat’s cheese.

The range of regional produce runs from Sologne asparagus and green lentils from Berry to black truffles from Touraine or Berry and Mara des Bois strawberries. Spirits, brandies and craft beers are also part of the offering. You can add regional food and wine to cultural and cycling plans without turning them into a fixed itinerary for every stay.

Nature Experiences by the River and in Protected Areas

Nature activities in the Val de Loire include walking and cycling on nature park trails, wildlife watching from observation points and viewpoints, and canoe trips and traditional boat excursions. Providers and seasonal availability vary. Sandbanks, wild islands and vineyards are among the landscapes along the Loire route.

North of Blois, visitors can spot the European otter, among other wildlife, in the Vallées de Grand Pierre et de Vitain nature reserve. This perspective on nature complements the history of châteaux and cities with a different way to experience the landscape.
