Saint-Lubin-en-Vergonnois lies in the Cisse Valley. When planning a stay, three themes stand out: waterside and woodland landscapes, walking and cycling routes, and Saint-Lubin Church with its architectural and artistic history. This range helps you choose what to explore based on your interests and set different priorities for your stay.
Riverside, Woodlands and Spring Blossoms
On the edge of the village, a green riverside setting invites you to picnic and watch frogs. The washhouse offers a cultural perspective on the water: it is fed by the Les Bernats stream, whose sources lie at the foot of the commune. Several springs are found in the woods on the heights, so the water features vary according to their location. In spring, extensive patches of daffodils are considered the village’s emblematic flower. If you want to plan your trip around a seasonal highlight, the daffodils offer a clear connection to spring; picnicking and frog-watching, by contrast, describe the riverside setting.
Saint-Lubin Church and Its History
Saint-Lubin Church dates from the 12th century and was originally under the authority of Marmoutier Abbey. The building consists of a nave and a choir ending in a semicircular apse. An apse is the rounded end of a choir; here, it is specifically semicircular. The church houses the painting “Sainte Jeanne de Chantal.” Its inscription identifies her as the founder of the Order of the Visitation in 1610 and records her canonization in 1767. Since 7 January 2010, the painting has been protected as movable cultural property. The dates refer to different things: 1610 and 1767 appear in the inscription, while 7 January 2010 marks its protected status.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Route
Two hiking trails marked by FFRandonnée 41 pass by the washhouse: “Les trois moulins de Saint-Lubin-en-Vergonnois” and the trail to Moulin de Champigny. Both trails share this landmark but differ in their names: one is called “Les trois moulins,” while the other names Moulin de Champigny as its destination. The Val de Cisse cycling loop is another option. It runs through the Cisse Valley and then downhill to Saint-Lubin-en-Vergonnois. When choosing between hiking and cycling, you can therefore weigh the hiking trails’ shared link to the washhouse against the cycling route’s passage through the valley.
A Seasonal Plant Sale
Another springtime attraction is the plant sale run by EARL La Ridière: from the beginning of spring, the business sells plants directly at its site in the hamlet of Guillebert in Saint-Lubin-en-Vergonnois. For plant enthusiasts, this direct sale complements the seasonal blossoms with a specific connection to the village.
