Saint-Aignan can be explored from different perspectives: by visiting the ZooParc de Beauval, looking at the town’s architectural history, or taking a walk along the Cher. The sights span different themes; choose the ones that interest you most for your trip.

The ZooParc de Beauval as a travel focus in its own right

At the ZooParc de Beauval, visitors can explore 46 hectares with around twenty animal areas. For directions when travelling there, the address is Avenue du Blanc, 41110 Saint-Aignan. Le Nuage de Beauval offers a special view of the zoo animals. Together with the park’s size and the number of its areas, this viewpoint makes a visit to the zoo a different experience from exploring the historic town.

You can decide whether the zoo will be the main focus of your trip or one of several interests by considering these options. The different animal areas provide a tangible framework for your visit; Le Nuage adds a special perspective on the animals.

A medieval town with architecture from different periods

The medieval town of Saint-Aignan is designated a “Site patrimonial remarquable” (remarkable heritage site). Its architecture brings together buildings from different periods. The collegiate church was built in the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint John and is a listed historic monument. Its nave is 16 metres high and supported by eight columns with sculpted capitals.

The Château de Saint-Aignan also tells the story of different eras. It is a Renaissance castle adorned with the scallop shell of Saint James and the salamander of Francis I. A fortress dating from the 9th century once stood on the site; the Tour Hagard remains as a relic of that fortress. These two neighbouring historic buildings let you see both the earlier fortress and the later Renaissance architecture.

The Château is privately owned and cannot be visited. However, its courtyard of honour and terrace can be accessed by a staircase from the collegiate church. Check these access arrangements again locally before your trip. This clearly limits a visit to the castle, while the collegiate church and its architecture offer a historic destination in their own right.

Town walk, exhibitions and architectural details

The municipal “Pas à Pas” walking route leads through the streets of Saint-Aignan to lesser-known places in the town. It can add to your view of the townscape if you want to explore more than just the best-known buildings. Other examples of the town’s architectural heritage include La Prévôté, a Gothic house dating from the 14th century, and the Villa Rose, a house built in the early 20th century with a recently restored sgraffito fresco.

Art exhibitions are held at La Prévôté from May to September. If these exhibitions are important to your travel plans, check the dates before you leave. The season offers a specific time frame and a venue whose architectural history differs from that of the later Villa Rose.

Along the Cher and on the cycling route

Île-Plage has a walking path along the banks of the Cher. From there, you can view Saint-Aignan and its architectural sights. This view from the riverbank adds another perspective on the town to exploring its streets and buildings.

The “Cœur de France à Vélo” route also passes near Saint-Aignan: further along, it heads towards Selles-sur-Cher, following the Canal de Berry. This gives cyclists a specific direction for continuing their tour; a detour to the Cher, by contrast, offers a walk with views of Saint-Aignan.

Getting there and planning your trip

Saint-Aignan can be reached by train via Saint-Aignan/Noyers station. Check connections before you set off. This way, you can plan your trip around the experiences you actually want.

The historic buildings, seasonal exhibitions, zoo and waterside routes appeal to different interests. If you want to combine several of them, set your own priorities rather than treating every place as a must-see. If your plans focus mainly on the zoo, the park’s address and Le Nuage provide practical guidance; for a cultural focus, the collegiate church, Château, Tour Hagard and “Pas à Pas” walking route take centre stage.
