The Cisse flows through Monteaux and is a right-bank tributary of the Loire. Monteaux is also part of the Val de Loire UNESCO World Heritage Site. The connection with wine-growing is framed differently: the Touraine-Mesland area extends across the territory of six municipalities, including Monteaux. These three facts operate at different scales: a river flowing through the town, a wine-growing area covering six municipalities, and a World Heritage Site in the Val de Loire. For your stay, the river, wine-growing and heritage therefore provide distinct, clearly defined points of reference.

Routes with different profiles

Three circular routes, with clearly distinct distances, are available for walks. La Besnerie de Monteaux is 4.2 km long, starts in Monteaux and loops back. Along the way, you pass the Église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul, a church dating from the mid-19th century. Its Neo-Romanesque style gives the route a specific architectural point of interest. The Saint-Laumer circular route is 7.1 km long, rated easy and takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The longest of the three routes, Les vignes de Monteaux, covers 13.1 km; it starts in Monteaux and loops back there. FFRandonnée 41 marks this route. To choose, you can compare the distances and circular-route format; Saint-Laumer also has a difficulty rating and an approximate duration, while La Besnerie features a church along the way and Les vignes has designated route markings. Check the latest route information and markings before setting out.

To choose between the different highlights, it helps to distinguish them: La Besnerie combines a circular route with a church along the way; Saint-Laumer offers an easy rating and approximate duration as well as its distance; the château makes its grounds a focus for sightseeing. This lets you choose between a route featuring a named landmark and a standalone sightseeing destination.

Architectural heritage in the town

The Château de Monteaux dates from the 16th to the 18th century and is partly surrounded by moats. Its grounds, including the park and the view of the courtyard, are open for visits free of charge. The park includes the Moulin de Giesvres. In the 18th century, the mill was converted into a Chinese pagoda; the Moulin is also open to the public. The term Neo-Romanesque describes the church’s style, while its dating to the mid-19th century indicates when it was built. Check the current access arrangements for the grounds and the Moulin before your visit.

Events and planning

The Fête de la Musique is the main event organised by a local association in Monteaux; dates and programme vary. If you want the festival to shape your stay, check the details before planning your trip.
