Courmemin combines marked walking trails and horse-riding activities with green, wooded surroundings. The parish church of Saint-Aignan and the Grande Maison shape its cultural character; local produce includes strawberries, asparagus and farmhouse cheese. These themes can offer different points of focus for planning your visit: culture, outdoor activities and agriculture.
Church Architecture and Half-Timbering
The parish church of Saint-Aignan was rebuilt in the 13th century in the Angevin Gothic style. Its choir has a flat end; the nave is divided into five aisles and comprises five bays. It also features a Flamboyant Gothic portal and a rose window. The choir and nave describe the layout of the church interior, while the portal and rose window are further architectural features. Those interested in architectural forms can consider the floor plan and design as two separate aspects, rather than judging the church solely by its age.
The Grande Maison offers a different note: the building is a half-timbered structure dating from the 16th century and was designated a Monument historique in 2004. Together with the church, it provides a contrast between a building in the Angevin Gothic style and a later half-timbered structure. The two dates mentioned refer to different aspects: the church’s rebuilding and the construction period of the Grande Maison. The half-timbered house was designated much later, in 2004.
Walking Trails and Landscape
There are numerous marked walking trails in Courmemin and the surrounding area. One named starting point is the Circuit de Banguin, which begins at the car park by the church in Courmemin. The two descriptions therefore differ in scope: the walking trails describe a wider range of options, while the Circuit gives a specific starting point. Deciduous and coniferous forests are part of the landscape along the Circuit de Banguin. The green, wooded surroundings are also a defining feature of Courmemin.
Horse-Riding Activities at Equinature
The Equinature riding centre in Courmemin offers lessons and courses in the ethological approach to horse riding. Equinature in La Cufelière, Courmemin, also offers horse rides. Lessons and rides are different formats that you can distinguish when planning your visit. As the activities may change, check with the riding centre in advance to find out which lessons or rides are available when you visit. The ethological approach to horse riding focuses on the horse’s behaviour.
Agricultural Produce
Agriculture is also part of the local character. Courmemin has strawberry and asparagus producers; in addition, two goat farms produce renowned farmhouse cheese. Plant-based produce and cheese represent two different sides of local production. Along with the wooded surroundings and buildings, they complete the picture of a place with themes ranging from culture and landscape to agriculture.
