Get to know Chitenay through its wooded landscape, designated appellations and layered local history. For planning, hiking trails, the seasonal opening of the Circuit Vapeur Denis Papin and Notre-Dame church offer specific points of reference.
Rural Landscape and Regional Products
Chitenay lies in the Sologne viticole agricultural region. The commune is rural and heavily wooded; forests cover 27 percent of its area. This gives the landscape a clear, measurable character. Chitenay is also associated with several AOP areas: the Cheverny, Cour-Cheverny and Crémant de Loire wine appellations, as well as the AOP area for Selles-sur-Cher goat’s cheese.
This means visitors can choose between different interests: the rural, wooded surroundings and a specific connection to wine and cheese. The three named wine appellations and the goat’s cheese make Chitenay’s culinary identity tangible. Together with the local hiking trails, they create a profile that brings together landscape, regional products and cultural history.
Hiking Trails and Seasonal Excursions
The easy circular trail “Découverte du vignoble de Chitenay” starts in Chitenay and is 8.2 kilometres long. Its length and difficulty rating provide two different points of reference for planning a hike. Route lengths and conditions can change; check the current route information before setting out. There is also the circular trail “À la rencontre de Denis Papin” in Chitenay. Chitenay’s hiking trails also pass by Notre-Dame church. Its façade was rebuilt in the 16th century and bears traces dating from the 11th century.
Another attraction with limited opening times is the Circuit Vapeur Denis Papin: from May to September, it is open to the public one weekend per month. Check the opening dates before your trip. The circuit includes several miniature railway layouts, including a track more than 250 metres long with a gauge of 7¼ inches. Children can ride a miniature TGV on this track. The limited opening period is important to bear in mind when planning; the railway offers a different focus from the hiking trails.
Denis Papin and Notre-Dame Church
The name Denis Papin is also part of local history: the physicist was born in August 1647 at Les Coudraies in Chitenay, on his grandmother Jehanne Dufour’s estate, known as a closerie. The named trails and the Circuit Vapeur take up the same name, providing another local point of reference for exploring Papin’s history.
Notre-Dame church dates from the 14th century and is dedicated to Saint Denis. It houses the collection of 13 paintings “Les douze Apôtres et le Christ” (“The Twelve Apostles and Christ”). It is listed as a protected object under protection order No. 7117 of 8 December 1977. Several historical layers come together at the church: the date the building was constructed, traces from the 11th century on the façade, and the protected collection of paintings. The earliest written mention of Chitenay dates from 1144 and concerns the Ecclesia Castanea.
